Library home to award-winning sober podcast

March 11, 20242 min read

A Sunshine Coast sobriety podcast is using the library’s free facilities to beam its message of hope to the world.

“Sober Awkward” co-hosts Victoria Vanstone and Hamish Adams-Cairns have been recording their weekly episodes in the Buddina StoryCast studio since November.

The podcast, which won “Australian Wellness Podcast of the Year” at the 2023 Australian Podcast Awards, has heard from the likes of Mudjimba musician Ziggy Alberts and UK dance giant Fatboy Slim.

Hamish said the podcast exposes the weird and wonderful world that comes with quitting booze.

“We tell our worst stories so that other people that used to drink, or still do can feel less embarrassed about theirs,” Hamish said.

Victoria and Hamish started using the library studio because they had nowhere else to go.

“We used to record in Victoria’s four-year old’s bedroom, which is not professional at all,” Hamish said.

Victoria said the studios allowed her to seperate work from family by getting her out of the house and around other people, while providing professional equipment.

A free podcast studio

The StoryCast Studio is ‘acoustically treated’ and free for anyone with a library membership.

The space provides easy access to quality equipment such as microphones, a podcast production mixer/interface, and “Audacity” editing software.

Libraries are expanding their reach into new technology and making it available to the community for free.

Since opening in 2021, many locals have utilised the podcast facilities to develop new digital skills, record, produce podcasts, and more.

The studio allows anyone to explore, create and produce podcasts in a welcoming environment.

To book a session at the StoryCast Studio visit the Sunshine Coast Libraries website.
