Miami: It’s the kind of music you’d expect to hear if you were driving down a Southern Californian coastline singing your favourite tunes with the windows down, and your worries far adrift in the balmy, salt-spritzed breeze.

However, the soothing electro-pop sounds of TOPS were born out of a far crispier climate on the opposite side of the northern American continent, in frosty Canada’s east-coast city of Montreal.

With songs such as “Petals”, “Way to be Loved” and “Dayglow Bimbo”, their songs are gentle and day-dreamy. Yet when paired with honest, stripped-down and straight-forward recordings, TOPS offer a slightly grittier and truer version of synth-rock.

TOPS will bring their super-chill grooves to the open air of the Gold Coast’s ‘locals-favourite’ night market, Miami Marketta, on Friday, November 24.

Formed in 2011, TOPS was born when songwriters David Carriere and Jane Penny teamed up with drummer Riley Fleck, quickly becoming one of the most influential underground bands of the past decade, creating a space for sophisticated pop music in the indie world.

With hearts firmly attached to their sleeves, the song-craft of this band delves into the emotional intricacy of personal relationships, offering propositional thoughts about power and desire.

Marta Cikojevic is responsible for those super lush keys and when synced with Carriere’s trademark guitar licks, Fleck’s measured drumming, and Penny’s unmistakable, wistful voice, the band’s trademark city-coastal magic comes alive.

With three self-produced records, a handful of radio-spinning singles, and more than 700,000 monthly Spotify users, it’s no wonder fans are continually falling for this band’s signature moody (yet-candy-sweet) ballads. 

This is a ticketed event at the Gold Coast’s Miami Marketta, known as Australia’s original and leading night market, which offers up a melting pot of culture, art, global street food and bespoke bars.

What was once a mechanics warehouse, you’ll find this eclectic local treasure perched right in the heart of Miami’s creative precinct.
