This is a new segment with Ryan Barwick (right) from Gold Coast band Loose Goose. He will give us a wrap up of the Gold Coast’s most Golden Gigs every month.
This year is off to an absolute flyer with a good mix of genres blessing our stages on the Gold Coast. So, allow me to ease you into the new year, with a few top picks for January, along with some slightly left field options that might just tickle your fancy.
MARKETTA MADNESS
It seems like every month there’s something exciting and new coming out of Marketta. It’s for sure one of my favourite places on the Gold Coast, let alone being an unbelievable music venue too.
Tomorrow (January 5), we have the privilege of seeing Australia’s very own home-grown act, The Rubens. With support from one of the hottest bands on the indie scene, Day We Ran, it’s shaping up to be an unforgettable night of hits. Unfortunately, this one’s already sold out, so count yourself lucky if you’ve already secured tickets.
If your motor is running way too fast, then you might want to head on down to the one and only James Reyne on January 7. Coming from Australian Crawl fame, it’ll be a step back into the 80s Aussie surf scene. Definitely a highlight of the month and one everyone can enjoy, both young and old.
LADIES ROCK
If you’re craving a bit of female-fronted rock that makes your spine tingle, then you’ll wanna find your way to Vinnies Dive Bar on January 27. With Rockhampton’s very own Vipersnatch (pictured left) taking the headline, followed by Foul Face, Liposuction and Pilot Crisis, it’s everything that Vinnies was made for.
HOME GROWN TALENT
The local GC pop scene is in good hands with a trio of stunning acts coming up. On the January 18 at Vinnies Dive Bar we have the privilege of seeing Klacey, Lavelin and Gabriella Gorman welcome in the new year with a double single lauch for Klacey and Lavelin. If you want to get on the tailcoats of some unbelievable up-and-comers this is the show for it.
GOOD OLD HEADBANGING
Maybe you’re after a bit of thrashing in a moshpit to loud guitars and sweat. One that grabbed my eye was Antenna and Gutter Pig at Mo’s Desert Clubhouse on January 12, two electric punk bands from Sydney. Another show for some romping and stomping would be OFF!’s show at Vinnies on January 21, following their first album in eight years. It’s all good circle pit material, so highly recommend getting to this one if you just want to cut loose for a night.
PICK OF THE MONTH
I might be biased as I’ve seen these guys twice already, but I cannot wait to see The Moving Stills (main picture and right) take over Mo’s Desert Clubhouse on January 21.
Aside from having a great name, their innovative pop/indie song writing, mixed with floaty vocals and a whole lot of long blonde hair, these boys are insane performers and know how to give their crowd an unforgettable night. I wouldn’t be missing this one for absolutely anything!
