Russell Crowe brings rock show to Gold Coast

December 9, 20234 min read

Internationally-acclaimed actor and musician Russell Crowe is set to rock out at the Miami Marketta on the Gold Coast in January.

He’s here for an “Indoor Garden Party”, featuring his band The Gentlemen Barbers and special guests Lorraine O’Reilly and Myth Of Her.

Crowe posted on X/Twitter: “Dear Gold Coast, We loved our sold out gig up there earlier in the year. So… let’s do it again!!”

The Academy and Golden Globe Award recipient was named Rome’s Ambassador to the world in 2022 and touted as a “Global Icon” by GQ magazine the same year.

But wherever he goes, trouble always follows the 59-year-old who was barred entry from a suburban Japanese restaurant in Melbourne for not wearing the correct attire. It was also a Friday at lunchtime, in 37 degree heat. Go figure!

And of course the latter story got all the publicity as it made global headline news.

Whether he’s telling the story, or people are telling a story about him, life’s always been turbulent for Crowe who continues to take his music around the country.

A musical life beyond the acting stage for Rusty

Picture from Facebook: Crowe has been holidaying in Sicily with his girlfriend Britney Theriot and teenage sons Charles, 19, and Tennyson, 17.

His current musical project started in 2009, in a pub outside London owned by chat show legend Michael Parkinson, and it has kept going in a haphazard, ad lib way since.

With this configuration, Crowe brings to the foreground The Gentlemen Barbers, who he has been quietly tinkering with for the last four years.

“There’s an attitude about this band. It’s got a groove,” Crowe says.

“We do a lot of story songs, but we also know we are here to blow out the cobwebs and give the audience a good night”.

Taking time between the shoots of films like Unhinged, Thor: Love & Thunder, The Greatest Beer Run and his latest movie release, The Pope’s Exorcist, the band has been playing and recording behind the scenes.

The relationships within the band go back 30 years.

Dave Kelly (drums) and Stewart Kirwan (trumpet) were members of Crowe’s former band Thirty Odd Foot of Grunts, as well as playing with Crowe in The Ordinary Fear of God, which included Stu Hunter (piano), and Chris Kamzelas (guitar).

James Hazelwood (bass) has fit right in and shares friendships within the band that go back decades.

Russell Crowe’s garden party is a ‘fluid’ event

Crowe says the Indoor Garden Party is “an event, a band, a happening”.

“It’s fluid,” he says.

“The personnel changes, but it’s always big. It’s like a festival where I gather people I admire, musicians and storytellers, and we put on a show.”
