Ash Grunwald and The Lyrical bring blues-reggae collision to The Cooly

November 3, 20232 min read

Coolangatta: Gold Coast reggae favourite Karl “The Lyrical” Smith will help Byron Bay blues legend Ash Grunwald launch his new album, Bluesfest Studio Sessions, at The Cooly on November 17.

A journeyman, storyteller, and songwriter at heart, Grunwald’s illustrious career has seen him support the likes of James Brown, The Black Keys, Jack Johnson, Xavier Rudd, and Keith Urban, playing at sold-out festivals across Europe, Japan, and North America.

With six Australian Top-50 albums to his credit, alongside five ARIA and four AIR Award Nominations, two APRA Awards, and top gong for Best International Act at the LA Music Critic Awards in 2014, Grunwald is cast in bronze among Australia’s most successful blues musicians.

He set the Mojo Stage alight at Bluesfest earlier this year, with a scintillating show featuring the moog-synth wizardry of Ian Peres and tropical ambassador of rhythm ‘n’ groove, Bobby Alu.

It also marked his 10th show at Bluesfest, officially enshrining Grunwald as an institution in blues folklore at Australia’s most iconic music festival.

To commemorate the momentous occasion, Grunwald entered Brooklet studios with Ian Peres (Wolfmother, Bernard Fanning), Bobby Alu (Xavier Rudd), and producer Nick DiDia (Springsteen, Pearl Jam, Rage Against The Machine) to record the set the trio had smoked at Bluesfest.

The new LP features all your blues favourites, such as “Ain’t no Sunshine”, curated from a career and catalogue spanning 20 years, and is officially released on November 17.

He joins reggae, beat-boxing and folk guitarist, “The Lyrical”, whose socially-conscious messages have streamed more than 15 million times on Spotify.

Karl “The Lyrical” Smith joins Ash Grunwald at The Coolangatta Hotel on Friday, November 17.
