Yelo music editor Penny brings the best of the Sunshine Coast’s live music scene every week.

Friday, February 16:

Brisbane folk act Cigany Weaver is at Black Box Theatre, Nambour, from 7pm. Offering a purely acoustic experience, the new-wave, gypsy-jazz outfit effortlessly navigates the musical nexus between intimacy and raucousness. A fusion of folk, classical and jazz, these exceptional musicians bring a vibrant atmosphere, with the soaring and enchanting vocals of front woman Jo Davie, complete with a fiery violin, dynamic guitars, and driving rhythm section. Tickets: here.

Caboolture alt-rock group The Phosphenes hits The Presynct with guests The Drop Beers and Postcode President. With anthemic rhythms, heartfelt lyrics, and an energetic stage presence, The Phosphenes even have a new single out. Tickets on the door. The Presynct is at 15 Anne Street, Nambour. Doors open at 7pm.

Our favourite PNG singer-songwriter Chris Cobb returns to Maleny Lane from 6pm-9pm, where his Australian musical journey began. An excellent storyteller, Chris will continue to share the next chapters of both his musical and life journey. It’s a BYO affair, with a $15 door charge. Food stalls open from 5pm.

Our local peace-loving lion, Mufassa will put on a free show to celebrate his EP launch at Solbar’s lounge bar from 5pm. “Drifting Away” was recorded at Yama-Nui Studio , and has already reached number two on the AMRAP charts. Performing all his favorite originals and covers, Dale Mallett will bust out his stomp box, harmonica, acoustic, loop pedal, and djembe to celebrate. Tickets: here.

Boo Seeka, with their half a million monthly Spotify streams, will take over the Friday night party at Solbar, from 7pm. Lose yourself in the breathless new chapter of the hypnotic project, driven by Australian singer-songwriter Ben “Boo” Gumbleton, who has a new album, “Midnight Highlight”. Tickets here.

The J in Noosa has Billy vs Elton from 7.30pm, with an extensive catalogue of brilliantly-crafted songs from Billy Joel and Elton John. With more than 80 ‘top-40’ hits between them, these two piano men dominated the charts for decades, their songs underscoring major life and world events for many of us. Tickets here.

Saturday, February 17:

Platinum-selling, Aussie hip-hop superstar Illy, supported by Cael Whip, comes to Solbar, with one of his biggest tours, “The Long Way Round”. “I just really miss the road”, Illy said of touring and will take in regional centres, with a stripped back performance and affordable tickets. Tickets: here.

Australian music legend Kevin Borich is back on the road, delivering his infectious genre of funkin’ rockin’ blues to Norton’s Music Factory at Caloundra West. Honed by years of experience, playing with the likes of Santana, Richie Blackmore (Deep Purple), Ron Wood (Rolling Stones) and AC/DC, Kevin Borich is a true force of musical nature.

The tour comes following the release of his latest album, “Duets”, which was met with rave reviews and shot swiftly to number one on the ARIA Rock, Blues and Jazz Charts. He’s joined by Sugarbag Blonde, with doors open from 6pm. Tickets: here.

The Coast’s first-ever Sunshine Coast Blues & Roots Festival will held at Aussie World’s famous tiki-inspired pub, the Banana Bender. Be sure to support the Pat Nicholson Band, Craig Madden Band, TJ Carter Band, Luke Anthony, and Reverend Billy Blues, for the inaugural event from 6.30pm-11.30pm at The Shed. Tickets: here.

Sunday, February 18:

ARIA Award-winning, Australian pop duo Bachelor Girl, will be live at The Imperial Hotel Eumundi, from 3pm. Vocalist Tania Doko and musician/producer/arranger James Roche bring all the fun and colour from the 90s, including hit singles “Treat Me Good”, “Permission To Shine” and “Buses and Trains”. Grab your tickets here.

Perth, indi-folk singer/songwriter Cameron Alexander brings the Sunday chill to Solbar from 5.30pm, with his passionate, yet melancholic, exploration love and relationships. Cameron’s perspective is both excitingly captivating and soulfully pensive, as he draws the listener in to consider how they think, what they feel and why that is.

And don’t miss our fave Sunny Coast accoustic musician John Veloso at Palmwoods Hotel from 2pm. While away the rest of your weekend as John performs a mix of contemporary, modern and classic songs.
