UK rappers The Streets will tour Australia next year to celebrate their sixth studio album.
They bring their trademark wit, tomfoolery and uptempo drum-and-bass to The Fortitude Music Hall on March 12.
“The Darker The Shadow The Brighter The Light” has all the markers of a classic Streets album.
It could be described as something akin to stumbling through different rooms of a nightclub.
A poetic offering, inextricably linked to the dance floor, it has waves of bass, garage and house laced in.
Frontman Mike Skinner acts as the keen eye tying his disparate world together. And the album shines the light on his exceptional lyrical wizardry and production.
Mike Skinner also made a film about The Streets
The album was released at the same time Mike made his feature film directorial debut.
He describes the movie as a “tripped out neo-noir” murder mystery based in London’s clubland. The movie shares the same name as the album. And is one he made almost entirely by himself.
The Streets hadn’t made an album in 10 years before this one. And it took Mike around the same time to make the film.
For one of the UK’s most legendary and consistent voices of the 21st century, this has been a new creative level unlocked for Mike, but on his own terms.
And while we don’t know the film’s Australian release date, The Streets are ready with an exceptional stage show.
It will have all the usual existential dread and social commentary, side-by-side the fun-loving shenanigans that these British lads bring.
And under the right conditions, there may even be some mosh pit participation.
