Fortitude Valley: Cheeky UK rappers The Streets tour Australia next year to celebrate sixth studio album, The Darker The Shadow The Brighter The Light.
They will bring their trademark wit, tomfoolery and uptempo drum-and-bass to Fortitude Music Hall on March 12.
The Darker The Shadow The Brighter The Light has all the markers of a classic Streets album and could be described as something akin to stumbling through different rooms of a nightclub.
Something you might have done at Cloudland?
A poetic offering, inextricably linked to the dance floor with waves of bass, garage and house laced in, frontman geezer-rapper Mike Skinner acts as the keen eye tying his disparate world together, shining with his customary lyrical wizardry and eclectic production.
The album was released at the same time Skinner made his directorial debut with a feature film of the same name, a movie he made almost entirely by himself.
It’s The Streets’ first album in 10 years, and it took Skinner around the same time to make the film.
Taking what was a finished album and breathing an entire film into it, the film is a tripped-out noir murder mystery based in London’s clubland.
For one of the UK’s most legendary and consistent voices of the 21st century, this has been a new creative level unlocked for Skinner, but on his own terms.
And while we don’t yet know the Australian release date of his new film, Skinner’s live music offering promises to deliver the usual captivating experience of existential dread and social commentary side-by-side all the fun-loving shenanigans that these British lads bring.
And under the right conditions, there may even be some mosh pit participation.
