October 1, 20262 min read

Sons of the East say a studio fire has destroyed instruments and new recordings, with the band scheduled to play Strummingbird on the Sunshine Coast on October 18.

In an Instagram statement, the Sydney indie-folk trio said their studio had burnt down, destroying almost all of their recording equipment. They said nobody was inside at the time and all firefighters who attended were okay.

The losses included instruments the band had owned and toured with for decades, along with computers and backup drives holding recordings of new material.

Photographs shared alongside the statement show a blackened studio interior, damaged instruments and debris beneath exposed ceiling beams.

Instruments and new recordings lost

The band said they were still coming to terms with the damage after waking to news that their studio had burnt down. They thanked the firefighters for containing the blaze and preventing it from spreading further.

Messages of support have followed, with the band thanking people who had offered access to studios and instruments while they work out what comes next.

“We have very exciting things coming up and this isn’t going to stop us.”

The band’s caption added that they were safe, thanking fans for their love and support. Their statement did not specify the cause of the fire or the studio’s location.

Sunshine Coast show still listed for October 18

The band played Kings Beach Tavern in Caloundra in May. See YELO’s photos from their Kings Beach Tavern show.

The band’s official tour schedule lists Strummingbird at Kawana Sports Precinct in Bokarina on October 18, following festival appearances in Ballarat on October 10 and Newcastle on October 17.

Their statement did not specifically address Strummingbird or confirm whether the fire would affect upcoming shows.
