A group of young Noosa musicians who have been working tirelessly for two years on the local circuit will release their debut single on January 25.
“Originality” is the lead single on Ampersand’s new album, produced at Yama Nui Recording Studio at Kiels Mountain.
To celebrate they will perform a free launch show at Solbar on January 28, with guest Harriet Wensley.
Ampersand is an entertaining, energetic and ever-evolving outfit, featuring funk and soul sounds, with two spectacular lead vocalists backed by a tight, innovative trio of keys, bass and drums.
Their new release follows a series of non-stop success for the independent retro-pop fusion band, who played at Caloundra Music Festival and Noosa Alive this year.
Built from scratch with nothing but their own varied skillsets, the group’s unshakeable support for each has seen them fearlessly rise to each new challenge.
Keys player Jarrod Tutbury said Noosa locals had become a second family, and their continued encouragement was also integral to their success.
Tutbury said the band had worked effortlessly together, improvising and conversing musically to create their own unique sound.
He said the single was produced in response to demand from their supportive audience.
Confident, outspoken and unapologetically direct, “Originality” is an ode to you guessed it, originality, which the music industry prides itself on when it comes to being credible.
“We were inspired by our experience with copycats, so the song calls out those individuals who can’t seem to find that self-motivation and inspiration within themselves without resorting to imitating others,” he said.
The single was made possible by the Australian Government’s Regional Arts Fund, provided through Regional Arts Australia, and administered by Flying Arts Alliance.
Co-written and arranged by the entire group, “Originality” features vocals, lyrics and melody by Katie Brown and Isi Semmler; keyboards and chords by Jarrod Tutbury; bass by Jed Green; drums and percussion by Orlando Hamilton-Craig; and guitar by guest artist Doc Hamilton.
