Maroochydore: If Sam Worthington has their merch then it’s no wonder this favourite Aussie indie-rock band is on high rotation of in-the-know celebrity music fans.
Worthington is quoted on The Rions’s website as having said: “I’ve got all The Rions’ merch. I love that band” – Sam Worthington (Avatar).
And given the band’s catapult-rise to stardom, we’re going to believe it’s true.
The Rions is an Australian four-piece band from Sydney’s Northern Beaches, consisting of four schoolmates Noah Blockley, Harley Wilson, Asher McLean and Tom Partington.
Under the guidance of their music teacher Mr John Stone (Angus and Julia Stone’s father), the Avalon Beach boys started performing at age 13.
They released “Night Light” in April 2021, which went on to win ABC’s youth radio Triple J’s, “Unearthed High”, in August that same year.
Follow up hit, “Disassociation”, was released the same day they finished high school, and by December they were snapped up by UNIFIED Music Group.
As part of their Triple J-wining prize, The Rions were gifted a mentoring session with Sydney pop-rock duo Lime Cordiale, and a support slot on fellow “Unearthed High” winner George Alice’s national tour.
They subsequently scored places on “Triple J Hottest 100” rotations, back to back.
Taking musical cues from their mentors and fellow New South Welshman, Lime Cordiale, and psychedelic-rockers, Ocean Alley, who are also from the Northern Beaches, The Rions has built an loyal fanbase overnight.
With an innate maturity and musicality in vocals from Blockley, and a musicianship and professionalism from his fellow bandmates, it’s unsurprising this band is blooming to stardom.
They bring their ‘ahead-of-their-years’ swag of new tunes to Solbar in November, with new debut EP, “Minivan”.
With crowd-favourite “Scary Movies” and singles “Minivan” and “Take What You Want”, the EP was recorded in the Byron Bay hinterlands with producer Chris Collins of Matt Corby, Skeggs and Middle Kids.
It covers the gamut of the band’s offerings, with Mylo Xyloto-like choruses, and a keen ear for humility and intimacy.
The songs capture the joyful mischief that the four best friends have encountered as typical teens, running rampant through train stations and fields.
With each steady stride they took through those youthful years, it seems this EP is a giant leap into the band’s maturation and journey into adulthood.
“We really wanted Minivan to reflect the wild spirit of youth, with a sound that would evoke a sense of maturing and growing into the person you want to become,” they said.
“We’ve been looking forward to this day for a couple years now. An EP is something we’ve been wanting to create for a very long time and to finally reveal it to everyone is a huge deal for us.
“We hope that the story of Minivan resonates with our fans the way it does with us.”
With other musical influences such as Arctic Monkeys, Dayglow and The Beatles, The Rions has effortless carved out a popular sound of their own, along with a mind-boggling, 13-million streams world-wide.
Their sounds offer universally-felt experiences of existentialism, and both inter-and-outer personal relationships, as they enjoy making sense of the teenage angsty noise that surrounds them.
Join The Rions for their coming-of-age moment as they emerge from the studios with some of their strongest pieces yet.
The Rions will be at Sol Bar, November 9 from 7pm. Tickets: https://tickets.solbar.com.au.
