November 8, 20233 min read

Southport: Bobby Alu has been announced as the final headlining act for a week-long celebration of Southport’s newly zoned entertainment precinct.

Alu will perform at Mr PP’s Rooftop on November 19 from 5pm-6pm, as part of The Downtown Sound, which runs from November 13-19.

The Downtown Sound, is a free all ages event hosted by Vinnie’s, Mr P.P.’s Deli and Rooftop, and Last Night on Earth to celebrate the new Special Entertainment Precinct (SEP) at Southport, from November 13-19.

Alu is one of the Gold Coast’s many musical treasures, blending coastal folk with island vibes and soulful grooves.

The Australian/Samoan singer has toured the world in his own right, he’s also shared the bill with other industry greats such as Xavier Rudd, Busby Marou, and Nahko and Medicine for the People.

An ARIA Award nominee, Alu is a true ambassador of the pacific spirit, bringing joy and positivity to every performance.

He joins an incredible lineup including iconic Aussie rock band Regurgitator (main picture), at Vinnies Dive on November 17 and 18, and DJ Katch (pictured above), who spins the sounds on November 18.

One of the most influential people in the Australian hip-hop and funk, DJ Katch has collaborated with some of the biggest names in the industry such as Abstract Rude, The Pharcyde, Jungle Brothers, and Spikey Tee.

He is also a founding member of the Resin Dogs and Hydrofunk Records, and a master of turntables and samplers.

The Gold Coast City Council SEP joins two other precincts already established in Brisbane and Nambour, making them only three of their kind in Australia.

It redefines zoning restrictions in specified areas allowing smaller venues such as restaurants and bars to play louder music.

Mayor Tom Tate told YELO the SEP was based on Brisbane’s Fortitude Valley model “to separate noise management from the Office of Liquor and Gaming in order for this to be managed by Council”.

“Three live music venues have signed licenses with the City (including Vinnies) and a campaign is being developed to encourage more applications.

“This is the first project in this space which has taken many years to complete. Other proposals will be considered as the need and demand from stakeholders arise.”

Locals can expect a whole week of music, dancing, food, art and culture, with three venues, six stages, 21 street performers, and 150 artists over seven days.

There will be soul, Latin, Brazilian, afro and reggae, hip-hop, rock, punk, hard core and everything in between.
