Career opportunities for local musos

August 17, 20233 min read

Kunda Park: Looking for a career in the music industry? Want to stay local? The @light_industry_studio is hosting a careers workshop tonight!

A panel of five incredible speakers from all areas of the industry will descend on Kunda Park from 5.30pm to impart their wonderful wisdom with pre-drinks and shmoozing at @sunshinecoastbrewery.

It’s all a part of an exciting 12-month music industry development initiative, which saw Sunshine Coast arts company Feral Arts receive more than $100,00 in State Government funding through the Queensland Arts Showcase Program.

The AMPED Light Industry Studio Project will provide music industry mentoring, workshops, rehearsals, performances and showcases in partnership with key state and local organisations and key local high-profile festivals.

The aim is to help build a strong, connected and successful grassroots music industry on the Sunshine Coast in the lead-up to the 2032 Olympics. The investment of $103,500 includes a 12-month industry placement worth $33,500.

Feral Arts’ Executive Director Sarah Moynihan said AMPED would be a central part of Light Industry, a larger, multi-artform program based in the Kunda Park Industrial Precinct.

“Light Industry is a pilot for a national project focused on the activation of industrial and manufacturing precincts across the country by local artists. It’s a great example of the Sunshine Coast really leading the way.”

Project manager Ant McKenna said this was welcomed news for emerging Sunshine Coast musicians, songwriters and music workers.

“The project will deliver 22 music industry workshops, eight venue showcases and eight major external showcases, and industry events. It’s aimed at artists in the early stages of their professional careers and will provide a supportive pathway preparing them for and connecting them to professional work opportunities in the Queensland music industry.”

University of the Sunshine Coast (UniSC) Senior Lecturer and Project Partner Andy Ward said his research showed that the Coast had a significantly high population of emerging music talent, despite a statistically low number of grass root music incubators.

“This imbalance results in a disproportionate amount of the musician population in need of professional development to bring up to national and international standards, and a talent retention issue resulting in skilled musicians leaving the region,” he said.

“The Light Industry Project is an important part of a broader industry-wide effort to turn this around.”

UniSC Creative Industries graduate Justine Dunsmore said she was excited to join the team.

“As a recent graduate, it’s an amazing opportunity.”

The AMPED Light Industry Music Project officially launched last month. Light Industry Studio is at 2/11 Endeavour Drive, Kunda Park. Visit: lightindustry.net for more information.
