Some of the Sunshine Coast’s best-known musicians started out the same way: in local open mic rooms, testing songs in front of small but loyal crowds.
Sunshine Coast artists including Ziggy Alberts, The Chats, The Jensens, Andrea Kirwin and Taylor Moss have all reached bigger stages, but they each started by doing time in the dusty, vibrant traps of local open mics.
It is where the journey often begins. Open mic nights give musicians a place to test their voice, their songs and their nerves in front of a real audience, while introducing themselves to a tight-knit but welcoming music-loving crowd.
While some go on to bigger things, others prefer the quieter open mic corners, where there is still a Pandora’s box of undiscovered talent, underground venues and less-travelled communities to be found.
If you are looking for an intimate night out on the Sunshine Coast, where local music is the point and the room still matters, here are some open mic nights worth knowing.
Updated April 2026. Event details can change, so check venue pages before heading out.

Naamba Folk Club, Nambour
Naamba Folk Club is one of the Sunshine Coast’s most intimate blackboard-style music nights, now held at Small Change Espresso in Nambour.
It draws a special crowd, with a feeling of deep respect for fledgling folk musicians, wandering professionals, songwriters and local players giving it their all.
Organiser Karen Law, a Nambour music stalwart with a songwriting career spanning 30 years, made her own musical debut in the folk clubs of northern England.
She has brought that same feel-good sense of community to Nambour, with gentle storytelling and the kind of room that makes people feel like they have finally found home.
Naamba Folk Club is meeting on the third Tuesday of the month in May, June, July and August, with organisers planning to keep the night going through winter this year. Check the Naamba Folk Club page for the latest dates before heading out.
Small Change Espresso is at 124-126 Currie Street, Nambour.

What about Solbar?
Solbar was previously one of the Sunshine Coast’s most important open mic rooms, helping local musicians be heard, meet other players and find their feet in front of a crowd.
The Maroochydore venue has since closed, marking a major loss for the Sunshine Coast live music scene. Its absence is a reminder of how much local rooms matter, especially for emerging artists who need somewhere to start.
