New Farm: What was once a household name for Aussie music lovers is quickly becoming a household pain.
Silverchair’s Ben Gillies and Chris Joannou will bring the story behind their new problematic book, Love and Pain, to Brisbane’s Powerhouse on Monday, October 9.
With the media in a twist over the band’s fractures since the beginning, the boys want to tell their story in a straight line.
Noticeably vacant is lead singer/guitarist Daniel Johns, who has been vocal about the book saying he had wanted to receive a copy before it was printed so he could fact check it, also raising concerns about his health records being discussed and published.
From a Newcastle garage to worldwide recognition, the childhood friends Gillies (drummer) and Joannou (bass player) will tell their “remarkable story” of two teenagers who grew up as part of Australia’s greatest rock bands.
In their book, they tell tales that fans have never heard: how the band started, how they worked together, and how they ended up.
During this in-conversation with Australian songwriter, musician, record producer and media presenter Chit Chat Von Loopin Stab, the pair will discuss the intense pressure they were put under as two teenagers.
Silverchair was born when Johns and Gillies started making music together when they were only in primary school, with schoolmate Joannou later joining the band.
The band got their big break in high school, circa 1994, when they won a national demo competition and were signed by Murmur.
The two boys will talk with Von Loopin Stab about how they had no way of preparing for the lives they have since lead, how they navigated their friendships with each other, the mistakes they’ve made, and the successes they now cherish.
This will be a rare and vulnerable insight into Silverchair, a complex band adored by so many.
“It’s a story only we can tell, and we’re telling it with brutal honesty,” the boys said.
Silverchair is one of the most acclaimed and successful Australian bands of all time, winning 21 ARIA Awards – more than any other artist in history.
Each of Silverchair’s five albums debuted at number one on the Australian charts, but after their fourth album, Diorama, the group went on an extended hiatus, with Johns taking on solo projects and soaring to new heights.
They were active again between 2006 and 2010, only to take another indefinite break in 2011.
