Bob Evans brings Suburban Songbook anniversary tour to Brisbane

June 19, 20263 min read

Bob Evans will bring his Suburban Songbook 20th anniversary tour to Brisbane this October, performing the 2006 album in full with a full band.

The national tour celebrates two decades since the release of the ARIA-winning record, which helped cement Kevin Mitchell’s Bob Evans project as more than a side step from Jebediah.

The Brisbane show lands at Crowbar on Friday, October 23.

Released in 2006, Suburban Songbook became one of Bob Evans’ defining records, led by songs including “Don’t You Think It’s Time”, “Nowhere Without You”, “Don’t Walk Alone” and “Sadness & Whiskey”.

The album won the ARIA Award for Best Adult Contemporary Album, was certified Gold, debuted at number 16 on the ARIA Albums Chart, and was later included in the book 100 Best Australian Albums.

Bob Evans said the record came from a transitional period after a decade with Jebediah.

“When I think back to going to Nashville in 2005 to make the record and the whole two years that followed the album’s release, it does feel like a whole other life almost,” he said.

“I was coming fresh out of 10 years with Jebediah and even though I had been working on the Bob Evans thing for a while, it was always a side project that was never very serious.

“But with Suburban Songbook things were getting much more serious, both creatively and professionally.”

The tour will see the album performed “in full, in order” with a band, alongside extra material.

“I’m really excited to revisit this album and all the songs that kind of fell off the setlist over the years,” Bob Evans said.

“I’ve assembled a really wonderful group of players for this tour and so recreating the album with a full band will be awesome.

“I’m also excited to see how the record still resonates with people after so long.”

A special 20th anniversary edition of Suburban Songbook will be released digitally and on vinyl on Friday, September 4.

The vinyl edition will be pressed in limited-edition “gold nugget” colour, while the digital edition will be remastered and include several previously unreleased demos.

Tickets for the tour are on sale now via bobevans.com.au.
