Four serial killers. Four cocktails. One very strange night out in Brisbane.
If your idea of winding down involves a true-crime podcast, Brisbane has taken the concept several steps further. Serial Killer Speakeasy brings theatrical retellings of notorious murder cases to Fortitude Valley, with a themed drink for each one.
At Judith Wright Arts Centre, performers revisit the stories of Ed Gein, John Wayne Gacy, Jeffrey Dahmer and Ted Bundy in a 90-minute live show. It’s part theatre, part cocktail tasting and a fairly unsettling answer to the question of what to do on a Saturday night.
Four cases, four cocktails
The drinks have names to match the cases: Gein’s Cauldron, Killer Clowns, Apartment Two One Three and Friendly Stranger. Mocktail alternatives are available.
Rather than a conventional true-crime talk, the experience uses staged performances and storytelling to explore the cases. It also raises a question worth taking home: when real crimes become entertainment, where does curiosity end and spectacle begin?
