Jon Coghill donates iconic ‘Vulture Street’ sign

August 25, 20232 min read

Powderfinger drummer and Peregian resident Jon Coghill has surprised acclaimed-Brisbane author Trent Dalton with an authentic Brisbane City Council “Vulture Street” street sign.

The legendary Brisbane band met with fans at the city’s Palace Barracks Cinema last night to celebrate 20 years of its fifth studio album, Vulture Street, with a one-off screening of These Days (Live in Concert), featuring original recording of their 2003 Live on Vulture Street Tour.

It was a record that cemented them as Australia rock royalty and earned them the ARIA Award for Best Rock Album.

Obviously a huge fan of the band, Dalton, who hosted the night’s Q&A, beamed to fans on Instagram this morning: “This is me looking at my wife in confusion and rapidly rising elation because the members of Powderfinger had just presented me with (this sign)”.

The sign was from the private collection of Coghill.

“He gave it away because that’s the kind of profoundly cool man he is,” Dalton said.

“It was a thank you for hosting what turned out to be the most extraordinary and epic 20th anniversary celebration of the release of the band’s (record).

“You could not find a more genuine, generous, candid, self-deprecating, self-aware, socially-aware group of men.

“I’ve never seen a band give more to their fans… they stayed around for hours signing vinyl and taking snaps and talking to every last fan.

“Unforgettable. Thank you Powderfinger, we have missed you.”

Dalton said when presented with the street sign guitarist Darren Middleton had placed a comforting hand on his shoulder because he knew “his head was about to pop off” from sheer elation.

The Boy Swallows Universe author encouraged Powderfinger to make a comeback.

“We have missed you boys, since you’ve been gone.”
