Uni gives green light to alcohol

August 24, 20232 min read

Sippy Downs: Bottom’s up uni students!

It’s official.

The University of the Sunshine Coast (UniSC) today confirmed to Yelo it would move from a ‘dry campus’ to a ‘sticky’ one allowing students to soon purchase alcohol at the university.

Rumours had been circulating at the Sippy Downs campus that an open-air stage, offering live music, would soon be a permanent fixture at the uni, with food and booze also available.

A source told Yelo earlier this week that the owner of the UniSC’s Cafe C had been commissioned to open a pizza and beer eatery on campus.

Staff and students had been pushing for the move saying alcoholic beverages would allow students a chance to wind down after lectures.

It’s also been welcome news to the music faculty, which can now showcase the talents of the students, giving them a chance to test out their vocals and musical strengths in front of a live audience.

A UniSC spokesperson told Yelo: “UniSC’s Creative Industries venue currently offers an internal performance area that opens out to a lawn and piazza.

“Plans are in the works to eventually add an outdoor bar and food site closer to the brasserie that could host small performances in future.”

Industry leaders such as celebrity music manager Ian “Dicko” Dickson, a Maleny resident, had strongly supported the move in a bid to create a bigger music scene creating jobs opportunities.

However, others had mixed feelings. Read our story: here.
