Beastie Boys co-founder Mike D appears to be teasing a mysterious new project, with cryptic online activity pointing to something on the way.
The New York rapper, producer and Beastie Boys member has launched a website called Mike5D, alongside a run of social media posts showing artwork, studio footage and printed flyers.
The latest teasers have stopped short of confirming exactly what is coming. But the rollout has sparked speculation that Mike D may be preparing new music, a solo project or some kind of wider creative release.
Mike5D mystery builds online
The campaign has reportedly included a digital postcard, a Mike5D website inviting fans to subscribe for updates, and home-video-style clips of Mike D in the studio.
One recent video carried the caption “Getting ready. Coming up!”, while another post showed flyers being printed with the words “Coming soon. Very soon”.
The online activity follows a recent surprise appearance in California, where Mike D joined his sons’ band Very Nice Person on stage at the Ojai Valley Women’s Club.
During that appearance, he performed Beastie Boys classics including “So What’cha Want” and “Looking Down the Barrel of a Gun”.
Not a Beastie Boys comeback
For Beastie Boys fans, any movement from Mike D is enough to raise an eyebrow. But this is not being billed as a Beastie Boys return.
The surviving members have long kept clear boundaries around the group’s legacy following the death of Adam “MCA” Yauch in 2012.
Still, the Mike5D activity has given fans something to watch closely. Whether it becomes new music, live dates or something stranger, the Beastie Boys universe is making a little noise again.
For now, fans can only ch-ch-ch-check back and wait.
