Nambour loses ‘major pillar’ of community in Christopher Eccles

December 28, 20243 min read

The Sunshine Coast creative community is in mourning after the tragic loss of Nambour artist Christopher Eccles.

Christopher is pictured left with Nambour Councillor David Law, and gallery coordinator Julya Hegarty, of The Old Ambulance, where he had many artistic endeavours.

A GoFund Me page has been set up for his family.

Friends and family have turned to social media to leave messages and well-wishes for the much-loved community man.

Aaron Borg, who owns Bad Habit Records, closed his shop on Saturday, and spent the day painting his shop roller door in honour of his friend.

“The whole Eccles clan have been a pillar of the Nambour community,” Aaron says.

“It’s gut-wrenching to have such a loss for so many people. Sending massive condolences to the Eccles family.”

Nambour music promoter Kerley Mate says: “We lost a Nambour legend, a friend, a cultural pioneer, and a true creative force.”

“I feel privileged to have met Christopher Eccles, and to have called him my friend.

“Thank you, Chris, for supporting me, offering your advice, and being such a wonderful soul to talk with.

“Your legacy will not be forgotten. It will live on in the hearts of everyone you inspired and continue to grow.

“My deepest condolences go out to Pia and the Eccles family.”

The Old Ambulance Station also posted to Facebook.

“The grief of Nambour at the passing of artist and friend, Christopher Eccles @colouredtapesmatter,” it reads.

“He added his own unique creative style to Nambour’s art scene and the Old Ambo Gallery. We were privileged to showcase his brand of genius.

“Vale Eccles đź’”.”

Earlier this year, Cr Law used a recycled robot, made by Christopher, in his election campaign (pictured).

How you can help the family of Christopher Eccles

A GoFund Me page has been set up for the family of Christopher Eccles.

A post on the page reads: “During this very unexpected and tragic time, we want to ensure that the family are given the space to grieve with less financial pressure. And are able to cope with the expenses that come following such events.

“Eccles suffered an accident earlier in the year which meant he was unable to work for a large portion of 2024 so this will be a welcome support for the family who are always very stoic and never ask for help. It’s our turn as the community who loved this colourful character to support them where we can.

“The Eccles family are always the first to put up their hands to help someone, their house always open to any and everyone. Their kind and generous hearts need to be cared for during this time.

“Your help is appreciated, no matter how big or small.

“Hug your loved ones.”
