Powderfinger Drummer Helps Nambour Film Score National Win

Nambour’s creative scene has scored a national win with “Extraordinary Rob” named Best Australian Short Film at the Gold Coast Film Festival.

The short film was made in Nambour and co-written and produced by former Powderfinger drummer Jon Coghill, adding a strong local music connection to a growing Sunshine Coast screen story.

Coghill, who went to Nambour High before becoming part of one of Australia’s most recognised rock bands, worked on the film with director and co-writer Adam Szudrich.

“Extraordinary Rob” is an action-drama about a man who can do impossible things, but only when no one is watching.

A grassroots Nambour production

Shot in Nambour over two days, the film was created without a traditional budget, with cast and crew donating their time to bring the project to life.

It stars Damien Garvey, known for “Rake”, “The Artful Dodger” and “Jack Irish”, alongside Leigh Parker, who has appeared in “Supernatural”.

The film also features an original score by Daniel O’Brien, the award-winning composer behind music for “Bluey”.

Key scenes were filmed at Nambour Showgrounds, with Sunshine Coast Council supporting the production through access to outdoor locations.

Sunshine Coast screen scene builds momentum

The win points to the strength of the Sunshine Coast screen sector, including the work of the Sunshine Coast Screen Collective in connecting filmmakers and supporting local projects across the region.

For Szudrich, “Extraordinary Rob” is not the first Nambour-made film to reach audiences beyond the Sunshine Coast.

His earlier short film, “Slow Dating”, was also shot in Nambour and has won 37 international awards across more than 100 film festivals.

That track record gives the latest win extra weight, pointing to a local screen scene with reach beyond the region.

For Nambour, the award is another reminder that nationally recognised creative work is being made locally, across both music and screen culture.
