Silverchair music back in the hands of Daniel Johns

October 31, 20232 min read

National: Silverchair frontman Daniel Johns has signed a publishing deal with BMG that will give him ownership of the band’s entire back catalogue of music.

It also includes the 44-year-old’s solo album, FutureNever, and a film which he will release next year.

BMG will represent the publishing and record arrangements, including Silverchair chart-toppers, “Straight Lines”, “The Greatest View”, “Ana’s Song” and “Freak”, from 2025.

“Bringing my life’s work as a composer to BMG signifies the level of faith I have in this company and their people,” Johns said.

“I’m truly grateful to be in a position to sign the most important deal of my career with them.”

BMG helped bring the Grammy and multiple ARIA award-winning artist’s FutureNever projects to fruition, releasing his album with the same name and last year’s immersive Past, Present and FutureNever exhibition at Melbourne’s Rialto.

They also produced his award-winning 2021 podcast, Who Is Daniel Johns? (pictured below with sober friend and radio host Megan Holiday from the US).

“From my compositions on Frogstomp to FutureNever and everything in between, my songs belong at BMG,” Johns said.

And it’s a family affair with Johns’ brother, Heath Johns, president of BMG Australia, New Zealand and South-East Asia.

Former Silverchair bandmates, Ben Gillies and Chris Joannou, recently toured with their book, Love & Pain, which promoted “their side” to the band’s history.

They also appeared in a documentary.

Johns respectfully declined to be part of their projects, wishing his former bandmates well but raised concerns about his medical records being discussed.

John’s short film, What If The Future Never Happened, will be released next year.
