Gig Guide: The Penny Drop

January 25, 20244 min read

Hey guys! As always, there’s loads to froth over this week on the Sunny Coast’s live music scene. Here’s my top picks for Thursday, January 25 to Tuesday, January 30.

Today:

Jazz at The Presynct will kick off your Australia-Day long weekend, from 6pm tonight with Robyn Brown. Robyn is among the most respected jazz singers in Queensland, delighting audiences and impressing critics with her warmth, grace and natural ability to feel and interpret music.

Solbar brings the funnies with Funny Coast Comedy offering another beautifully crafted evening of world-class stand-up comedy. Headlining act Bart Freebairn sells out shows at the Melbourne and Sydney Comedy Festivals. That one kicks off at 6pm.

Local roots man Jack Raymond will be at Noosa’s new shakin’ burger joint, New York Minute, from 8pm. Jack drops his debut solo album, “The Long Story Short”, next month with a launch show at Boiling Pot Brewery on February 23.

Friday (Australia Day):

Buderim muso Beaudi Dwan will bring his mix of loose Americana and dirty folk-rock to Solbar. Beaudi will play his debut single “Frames”, with support from Pablo and Annan from Redwood Scoundrel. They will be in the Lounge Bar from 5.30pm.

Then from 7pm catch Coolum Beach crew Shen Panthers, supported by Nuraini and Nuffin Butta, who bring a refreshing but nostalgic perspective to the Australian surf rock scene.

The Presynct has a nicely thought out addition for Australia Day with Indigenous man Kazm, from Dubmarine, bringing his latest venture Kairos Kin to Nambour. The duo will provide live beats, rap and dance, with messages of harmony and their hope for Australia to come together as one. Presynct owner Rusty says, “We love his visions and messages and so stoked to have his new band play on Australia Day where a lot of people don’t know what to say or do. And it’s what we believe in too- no discrimination: all are included and welcomed, no matter what.” Doors open at 6pm.

Saturday:

Sunny Coast long-haired legend Pricey will be dropping by Kings Beach Tavern for a free show on Saturday to put a rock n’ roll finish to the Triple J’s Hottest 100 countdown party. Pricey recently caught the eye of Aussie rock royalty The Screaming Jets, touring with them nationally.

Solbar will have their own Hottest 100 Party in the Lounge Bar from 4pm with a DJ set by Shantan Wantan Ichicban and DJ Bev Thrills to follow from 9pm in the Band Room. Shantan is the ultimate party thrower, and is known for his Friday House Party spot on Triple J.

The Presynct brings more messages of hope with some conscious hip-hop from Scopes and Justice X.

This show backs the venue’s Australia Day message of inclusivity, and is a fusion of the arts, with audio and visual samples of Martin Luther King Jr.

Sunday:

Noosa fusion-funk band Ampersand, who supported Skunkhour at Imperial Hotel last month, will showcase their debut single in Solbar’s Lounge Bar with Harriet Wensley from 5.30pm.

Tuesday: Texan Cowboy Charley Crockett (main picture) is back for an Australian summer, dustin’ off his boots for a wild tour covering the country from east to west with his smouldering ballads and razor-sharp songs.

Oozing Americana and drenched in timeless classic tales, Crockett’s neo-traditional country swagger lassos the listener into dreamlike nostalgic westerns of wandering, whiskey, and the wild, wild west. He will be at King’s Theatre, Caloundra’s The Events Centre, from 7.30pm. Tickets here.
