It’s not over until the fat lady sings and it appears BluesFest might not be sending her out just yet.
The BluesFest swansong went viral in August when the much-loved Australian music festival announced 2025 would be its last year.
It was during an avalanche of news stories this year where many music festivals were declaring a similar fate, including Caloundra Music Festival, Horizon Festival, Splendour in the Grass and Groovin the Moo.
However in a recent interview with IQ Magazine, Festival Director Peter Noble disclosed that he might have been making it all up.
State Government declines investment offer
He told the magazine the ploy was to attract the attention of the State Government, who he says declined to invest in BluesFest during the difficult financial time.
“August was a time of great disappointment,” Noble tells IQ.
“We had said to the government ‘Look, we need investment at this time, the cost of living crisis is really affecting events and there are cancellations everywhere’.
“They sent me a Dear John letter saying we’ve decided not to invest in you. During the last 12 years, Bluesfest brought $1.1 billion to our state through inbound tourism. That is a tsunami of gold but it seemingly doesn’t count. The [state government] just wanted to put it in their coffers and not take responsibility for Australia’s great events.”
He told IQ Magazine that it was more of a ‘call to action’ rather than a ‘resignation to fate’, hinting that the move was designed to grab the State Government’s attention.
“Do we have to say it’s the last Bluesfest to get people to focus on us?” he told IQ.
“Regardless, I will always find a way for Bluesfest to go forward—that is my job.”
According to Tone Deaf: “Despite his earlier proclamations, Noble is actively booking artists for a potential 2026 festival and has re-opened discussions with the New South Wales State Government about securing support for the Byron Bay-based event.”
On Tone Deaf’s Facebook page, social media user Rory Breaker chimed say it was a “marketing 101” move by the festival organiser.
“Announce that it’s the final blues. Everyone gets FOMO, ticket sales skyrocket. So far everything is going to plan. Hats off to Blues Fest. You played the public like a cheap piano.”
So, did we just get played? Or marketing geniuses? Tell us at editor@yelo.live.
