BARKAA will headline Horizon Festival on the Sunshine Coast

February 7, 20252 min read

Australian hip-hop queen BARKAA will headline a bold new Horizon Festival on the Sunshine Coast.

The Malyangapa/Barkindji rapper will conclude the event’s Opening Night Street Party at Solbar.

Held from May 2-11, Horizon Festival is the region’s leading contemporary arts event, serving up 10-days of art, music, performance.

It forms a collaborative and region-wide program which celebrates art, people and place.

One such collaboration is Patricia Piccinini’s hot air balloons: “Sky Whales Across Australia” (pictured).

The partnership between National Gallery Australia, Caloundra Regional Gallery and UniSC, will see two monumental whale sculptures floating high over our skies.

Like many arts festivals across Australia, Horizon took a break last year due to economic pressure. A full program will be released on February 27.

Horizon Festival Program sneak peek

Sunshine Coast Mayor Rosanna Natoli says locals can get involved in the many creative activities leading into the May festival.

Horizon Festival is calling for performers of all ages, ethnicities, genders and body types to take part in a mesmerising performance that invites up to 100 community members to move together in an act of radical slowness.

“The performance, “Us And All of This“, created by Liesel Zink (pictured) with sound artist Lawrence English, will momentarily unfold across urban public spaces and will be performed during the festival.

“Our libraries are also working with Horizon, offering a series of free, hands-on art workshops, where our community can embrace creative collaging, interactive electronics, lo-fi prototyping and digital storytelling to create a Radical Hope Machine.

“This exciting opportunity will culminate in an artwork displayed during the festival.

“Horizon is a chance to experience, listen and see our region in a new light, to be immersed, excited and energised by this amazing place we call home.”
