Billy Howler finds online “tribe” with new song

April 13, 20254 min read

Sunshine Coast music producer and singer/songwriter Billy Howler is winning hearts in more ways than one with his debut track.

“Keep My Fire Lit” has enjoyed thousands of streams in a matter of days since its release, but it’s the connection Billy has made with his new online “tribe” which has resonated with fans the most.

Billy always wanted his online presence to be more than just the music, but a place to share intimate stories in a bid to heal and connect.

His band, The Badlands, represents this shared community, and it seems this landing platform is already connecting those wanting to overcome their own life challenges.

One Facebook post has already gone viral, and Billy has had countless people reaching out to him to share their own story.

“It’s about building a strong, inclusive movement of change-makers and dreamers”, Billy says of his vision.

“(It’s an) inclusive tribe that stands united in pursuit of meaningful change.”

Healing the past with music and connection

Born in Singapore and raised in Malaysia until the age of two, Billy’s early childhood was marked by frequent relocations.

But despite the constant change, Billy found solace in music and books.

So when Billy lost his mother to suicide 11 years ago, he turned to what he knew best: indulging in music like never before.

Standing in the face of tragedy, Billy put himself through audio engineering college in Melbourne at the age of 23.

Now, a sound engineer at Easy Tape Studios in Burnside, he knows too well about what goes into making a record.

His music emerges as a blend of divine inspiration and emotional expression, offering a genuine and authentic sound.

New song showcases Billy’s healing tools

Billy says “Keep My Fire Lit” is a showcase of the tools he used on his own healing journey.

Skilfully combining personal storytelling and his earlier musical influences, it boasts an enchanting blend of primal drumming and soulful guitar.

“It is a blending of all the healing elements of music that have aided me on my journey: primal drums, soulful guitar, and storytelling,” he says.

“It encompasses everything musically that has supported me in my journey, bridging the gap between contemporary music and primal rhythm.”

Billy’s sound merges traditional country folk with contemporary, and he is a natural when it comes to creating sounds that elevate the lyrics and melody.

He says it’s a reflective song about putting love above all else.

“I wrote it about a ‘situationship’ and choosing love anyway. Even when people are doing everything they can to push people away. Some people can’t see what they’re doing to push love away.

“It’s just a great life song. Like, you know those moments, where it’s the perfect sunset, or the surf is perfect right as the moon comes up?

“Or even when you need comfort after you lose someone.”

“Keep My Fire Lit” was co-produced with Nyssa Ray Recordings at Easy Tape.
