Quick take

Mooloolaba’s back-alley live music hideaway

Hidden down an unassuming path off Brisbane Road, Blackflag Mooloolaba gives the Sunshine Coast a small live room where the crowd, performers and venue seem to fold into one another as the night builds.

Its music program moves between indie, punk, alternative rock, heavier shows, hip-hop, launches and mixed local bills, with many events free to enter.

Venue feel

What it’s like

The stage feels like a room of its own, with a large rug underfoot, soft lighting around its edges and an internal staircase disappearing to the floor above.

A bar, pool table and compact standing area make up the indoor space, while the outdoor section gives people somewhere to drink, talk and step away from the volume between sets.

Nothing is far from the music. When the room fills, the crowd is close enough to see every expression and feel every change in the performance.

Room note

Free live music, properly curated

Blackflag Mooloolaba has been building a run of named, carefully matched events rather than treating bands as background entertainment. Each lineup has its own identity, artwork and reason for existing.

Free entry gives people room to take a chance on artists they may not already know, while the small layout helps turn unfamiliar bands into immediate, close-up experiences.

The result is a venue where audiences can discover new local acts without needing to recognise every name on the poster first.

Two Blackflag rooms

Mooloolaba and Coolum play different roles

Blackflag Mooloolaba is the smaller original taphouse, with intimate local shows, free multi-band nights and performances that spill into the crowd.

Blackflag Coolum is the larger brewery room, hosting national touring acts, major ticketed shows, festivals and heavier events inside the Coolum industrial area.
