Coolum’s Fight to Bring Tones And I to Town

January 21, 20263 min read

When Aussie music legend Tones and I put the call out to fans to compete for the chance to bring her to their town, Coolum business woman Leigh Kuryj was the first to throw her town into the spotlight.

Within minutes, the savvy bookkeeper — AKA the “Sunshine Coast Punter” — alerted the local radio stations, newspapers and media.

Since then, a wave of local media attention has rolled in, adding even more fuel to the community push.

Tones and I originally posted the challenge on social media on January 18, calling her fans to help her throw an all-ages party in their town.

“One big show. $10 tickets.
20th of Feb. All ages.
Whatever place goes the hardest gets the show!!
Full band, full choir.
I’ll bring the stage if it’s a small town…
I’ll announce the winner in 7 days.
Go ahead, I’ll be watching!”

Pricey throws his famous green VB hat in the ring

Coolum rockstar Pricey has also jumped on the Tones and I train, sharing a throwback photo of himself and Tones from Laneway Festival in 2020, when he was playing his huuuuuge band The Chats.

Now, like his song goes, locals want to get Tones and I into town and onto the famous “Coolum Beach Bowls Club courtesy bus”.

Pricey is renowned for being passionate about his hometown, hosting his annual Big Weekend Festival in the tourist hotspot, which brings together both emerging and A-list talent.

Leigh says Tones and I will bring hope to the local industry

Community spirits have been low since losing the beloved The Station this month – a huge blow to the local music industry – and this campaign has become a moment of renewed hope for the community.

Leigh says, “I think the whole Sunny Coast will benefit from her coming to town. It’s the boost everyone needs right now.”

“I love her soul — her humble beginnings, her courage to make it happen, and her honesty in writing about success and then questioning life when you make it – like Cloudy Day. One of my favs.

“Another favourite is Sorrento. She had her Papa write a letter about his life. She wrote the song from that, for her Nana.

“It’s about her hardworking Papa and enjoying the simple things and coastal life. It’s what I love about Coolum Beach.

“And why I volunteer with Coolum Business and Tourism — to help keep that balance between business, whilst protecting our beautiful coastal town’s essence, environment, and community.”

Let’s keep this going for Coolum and the Sunshine Coast music industry!

Keep posting.
Keep tagging.

Let’s show Tones and I why Coolum deserves their moment.
