Katy Perry might have been right when she said âif it’s not like the movies, that’s how it should be”.
Drew Wilson, who recently opened for Ben Lee in Mapleton, has a new song about love which shares a similar sentiment to his fellow US popstar.
The Sunshine Coast singer/songwriter’s single, âYou Still Look Good to Meâ, is an uplifting indie-pop classic, providing hope for those struggling in love.
As a father-of-two, Drew wants his music to always leave people better off.
âItâs a song for lovers to remind their other halves that they may not feel good in who they are, but they only need to impress one person,â he says.
âAnd that person is more in love with them today than they were the day they met.
âIt could also be a looking in the mirror song, where youâre telling yourself, âIt doesnât matter where youâve been and where youâre going, just be confident and positiveâ.â
Drew reminds us that love comes with its challenges
Known for his popular tunes, âHolding onto Youâ and âMissing Youâ, Drew says the song also reminds us that love inevitably comes with its challenges.
âThe song is about someone not feeling good about themselves,â he says.
âItâs self-pity, remembering the better days when gravity and age hadnât jaded you.
âItâs about embracing the one you love and celebrating them for who they are.
âItâs a love song maybe, but âcontentment songâ is probably more accurate.â
Drew takes us inside his song-writing process, saying as a storyteller itâs important to explore characters and situations beyond his own realm.
âWhen I write songs, I donât write with myself or personal life events in mind.
âI try and put myself into another character. Sometimes I might pick a character from a TV series, book or movie and try and express what theyâre feeling.
âBut Iâm always coming from the positive sphere.
âI also try not to be too descriptive when describing a song, because one listener might think it means one thing, and thatâs maybe what theyâre going through and can take comfort in.
âThis song can mean a lot of things, such as the concept that love grows stronger and doesnât diminish.
âMaybe itâs a discussion around body image, ageing, and not letting those pre-conceptions get in the way of love.
âIt could be about the ups and downs and never giving up on the one you love.
âIt could be about trying to pep or prop someone up, reminding them that they are worthy and they are special to someone.â
How Drew’s music shot to international heights
Drew’s music took a leap this year when he collaborated with international DJ/Producers Iaco, Riesling, Just Fede and Starzun, to release two tropical-house songs. Â
âWhat would I doâ (270,000+ Spotify streams) and âTake it slowâ (35,000+ Spotify streams) have been well-received, the former being added to full rotation before release to 91.9 Sea FM.
This year, Drew also released a cover of the 1980s John Waiteâs hit, âMissing Youâ and an original song, âNow Youâre Goneâ.
He played a local set to fans earlier this month, when Drew launched his new music at Maroochydore’s premier live music venue, Solbar, supported by Beau River and Darcy Kate.
