Gig Guide: Golden Gigs with Ryan

February 2, 20246 min read

Ryan Barwick from Loose Goose gives Yelo his a wrap up of the Gold Coast’s most Golden Gigs every month.

February is notorious for being the month where every band panic-books a show to kick the year off, after realising they’re already one-twelfth through the year. Luckily, there’s enough packed into this month to help you get over the fact that you’ve already failed your New Year’s resolutions, and that includes the 30 days of your gym membership. Ah, f*ck it. Let’s get this show underway!

LOCAL MAYHEM

There’s a surf rock extravaganza going down at Mo’s Desert Clubhouse TONIGHT (February 2), and it’s a big, diverse line-up of local bands that’ll have you fanging for more. Headlining is Loose Goose (my band!) and Byron Bay newies Flukes of Sendington, supported by Daysick, PJ Sheek and Mermaid Waters.

There looks to be a new powerhouse on the rise in the local scene, with Gold Coast natives DROPICS releasing their debut single, “Tulips”. And lucky for us they have an epic show pencilled in for February 23 at Vinnies Dive Bar. Couple it with the fact it’s supported by some huge Brisbane bands, The Local Romance and Sharehouse, I think this is well and truly the most exciting show of the month for me.

Another cracking show will be Jono’s Mate Sheep at Vinnies Dive Bar on the February 16. All three of the opening bands – Yours to Keep, DimmerIndiana and Splitlid – are doing some great work in the local scene, so it’ll be interesting to see how the show goes.

HITTING THE SQUARES

Indi rockers Salty Season‘s show at Elsewhere on February 9, powered by the good folks at Tiny Minds, promises a solid mix of rock with a pinch of salty riffs to get you grooving, and these lads never disappoint. They are genuinely one of my favourite live acts and have a genuine audience full of heart. Any show of theirs is money well spent. If you’re a Catfish and the Bottlemen fan you’ll love this one.

COUPLA BIGGER ACTS

As much as we love seeing our smaller bands represent, when a decent sized act comes from interstate or overseas, you gotta be all in. Adam Newling will be strutting his stuff at Miami Marketta TONIGHT (February 2), while one of New Zealand’s hottest acts, NO CIGAR, graces the stage on February 15, also at Miami Marketta. I can’t wait for both of these, they’ll be absolutely nuts.

MELLOW YELO

Now here’s a little package of shows I think go quite nicely together.

First up we have Budjerah (main photo) on February 10 at Miami Marketta, and there’s absolutely no doubt this will be an amazing show. Budjerah is almost a household name in Australia at this point, so if you want a cruisy, heartfelt Saturday then you know where to be.

Local groove kings Buttered play on February 16 at Mo’s Desert Clubhouse, and I think they are the perfect pairing for a Budjerah fan so check them out too. Their music is genuinely so soothing – like butter! – and makes for an awesome after drinks chill sesh with the lads or ladies.

Also on February 16 at Miami Marketta is the larger-than-life, 80s and 90s-inspired, Client Liason. This Aussie indi-pop duo, with vocalist Monte Morgan and keyboardist/producer Harvey Miller, sure know how to throw a super fun dance party so be sure to grab your favourite frat pack, maybe some vinos, and get your boogie on, you’re gonna love this one.

Then we have Boo Seeka at Miami Marketta on February 25, coming off a run of shows right across Europe. With silky smooth, whiskey-soaked vocals, these guys will have you in a Sunday arvo coma.

80s BANGERS

Who remembers, “Funky Town”? You know how it goes! “Gotta make a move to the town that’s right for meeee…..?” The return of 80s pop-rock band Pseudo Echo has got the local community in quite the tizz. These mega-rad icons take on Kingscliff Beach Hotel February 10, and we all know that Stacey and her girl squad will be getting on the giggle juice and tearing up the dance floor for this one, so don your best fluoro and get amongst it I say!

HOT POTATO, HOT POTATO

I know nothing about these guys, BUT sometimes a band just jumps out at you, and with a name like that, and all that back-up brass, these funksters look like they put on a high-energy, rollicking good time. It’s not normally the band I’d be frothing to see, with their Wiggles-esque name, but look at them! Something about them just screams FUN. So why not? Hot Potato Band is at Miami Marketta, February 9.
