Words: Ryan Barwick
Ryan from Loose Goose gives an insight into the creative process behind new single, “Cav Ave Kebab”. The Gold Coast band is about to hit the road for the first time with a tour of south-east Queensland.
Loose Goose hasn’t skipped a beat since forming as a band just last year and releasing their first single, “Tin Shed”.
The high-energy surf-punk song has proven to be a firm crowd pleaser among locals, and the boys from Burleigh are continuing the momentum with new single, “Cav Ave Kebab”, which they take on tour this week.
Described as a “surf thriller”, the song is driven by a thumping bass line from beginning to end, and is filled to the brim with attitude and spite that sucks you in from the start.
Listen to “Cav Ave Kebab”:
So, how is a song born?
Frontman Ryan Barwick walks us through the creative process, including the wild events that lead to the song’s inception.
The creative process
“A couple days befor our release show for ‘Tin Shed’ I was sitting there feeling a little crap because I felt I hadn’t written anything good in a fair while,” Ryan said.
“I didn’t really have anything solid to follow up the debut song, and we didn’t wanna make a ‘Tin Shed 2.0’, we wanted to do something different.”
“I love surf music, and I love Sunroom from the US, so I just sat down and absorbed all this surf music for a few hours.
“When I finally sat down with the guitar, the first thing that came out was that bass line.
“I sent it to the boys, and we all loved it: all the attitude and edge.”
Write about whatever you want
“I got a good piece of advice from Matt from Chutney which was essentially, ‘screw them, write what you want’.
“I had a breakup that was quite messy just before the band started in early ’23, and so I just called back to the feelings I felt then and just tried to paint how it felt when it was all unravelling.
“Our songs have always been pretty bitter and sour.”
However, the real spice comes from the meaning behind the song.
“I think I was scared to write about my own experiences since there was a bit of fear of who would hear it and what they would say.
“I didn’t really have any idea what I was writing, it was all melody up until most the song was recorded.
“There was a specific run I used to do past a kebab shop on Cavill Avenue that served as plenty of inspo, so once the idea was solid, we were off to the races with the writing.
“Now it’s finished, I can definitely say it’s about two opposite people trying to force something to work, and knowing when to walk away and stop wasting time.”
