Sunshine Coast newcomers Hyena Smyle will debut their blistering pop-rock sound at The Presynct in Nambour on Saturday.

Marking the arrival of a fresh, fierce voice in Australian alternative music, the female-fronted, three-piece channel the golden era of 80s and 90s alt-rock.

The band has already carved out a name for themselves, performing across the Coast and Brisbane alongside Jollee, Viper Snatch and Ruination.

Blending nostalgic grit with punchy pop-hooks, the result is a high-energy, catchy sound with a “smyle” that bites. Think: Garbage, Weezer, Smashing Pumpkins and Divinyls.

Formed just last year, front-woman Annie commands the stage with soaring vocals and driving bass lines. Guitarist Josh brings razor-sharp, melodic riffs, while drummer Dale powers every track with tight, hard-hitting rhythms.

Hyena Smyle will perform their new song “The Payoff” at the show: a hook-laden sonic grenade built to detonate in your head long after it ends.

Produced, recorded and mixed by James See at the famous Airlock Studios in Samford, the song was mastered by Matthew Grey.

It’s packed with unfiltered lyrics, femme-fuelled fire, and relentless drums with driving guitars.

Pop-rock born out of a mother’s frustration with modern life

The song came about through Annie’s personal confrontation with the pressures of modern life.

“After having my youngest son, I was feeling burnt out, exhausted and full of frustration, and ready to pour all of that angst into a rock song,” Annie says.

“In ‘The Payoff’ I got it all out on paper. The endless giving to everyone except myself, the exhaustion of being a working mum, and the pressure to please others.”

She says the song is about “reigniting” the spark inside when you “frankly no longer give a f**k.”

“As the lyrics say, I’ve got one life baby, and all the world’s a stage’.”

Hyena Smyle will complement their release with a music video dropping via the band’s YouTube channel on Sunday.

The clip was produced and filmed by Danny at 1050 Collective who has created music videos for heavy-scene bands Buried in the Sun and Vessel Born.

With a massive year ahead, 2026 is shaping up to be Hyena Smyle’s breakout moment. A follow-up single release and a South East Queensland tour are slated for late March.

Hyena Smyle will play at Rock Party at The Presynct on Saturday (December 13), supported by Dirty Hearts, Buried in the Sun, Sailing in Space and Pussy Jane. TICKETS: Oztix.com.
