Make Them Suffer frontman wants to ‘try a meat pie in every town’ on regional tour

Make Them Suffer is set to kick-start their regional tour with frontman Sean Harmanis declaring he wants to “try a meat pie in every town”.

The Perth metal-core rockstars will play at the The Station on the Sunshine Coast on June 14, after stopping in Mackay and Gladstone.

They then play another 15 shows across the country, including the Gold Coast, Central Coast, Albury, Geelong, and Fremantle.

Sean says he is looking forward to stepping off the usual glitzy runway trap – where plane-hopping between major cities is the norm – and instead join his bandmates on an old-school tour bus, soaking up the scenery.

“It’s out first-time ever touring Australia in a bus,” Sean says speaking to Yelo photographer Marc Roberts.

“This is going to sound extremely cheesy, but it’s the truth. The only expectation we have is that we have a significant amount of pub feeds and do all the sightseeing, and have a blast at the shows.”

“I wanna try all the local bakeries. Try a meat pie in every town.

“Experiencing the drives (and) being able to look out the window and soak it all in, is so much more rewarding in that sense.

“Nothing beats staying in a pub in that sense.”

Remembering that time they slept ‘illegally’ on sand dunes

Sean says it’s been a long time between drinks – and stages – for the band, having not played on the Coast for several years.

However, he shared a fond memory of a time they slept, “probably very illegally”, somewhere on our sand dunes, in sleeping bags, while on tour.

“We started a little fire… it was super cool to just fall asleep under the stars to the sound of the rolling waves.

“That was awesome. That was a memory we will cherish for a long time.”

A band fluent in endurance and innovation, thriving against varying states of flux for over a decade, Make Them Suffer have arrived at their most galvanised era to date.

Amongst a lineup change, a global pandemic, and the residual reality of external expectations, the group faced ongoing hurdles leading into their fifth studio album.

Like a greatest hits album, but with ‘all new songs’

Their self-produced 2024 album is unflinchingly driven by cohesion and candour, simultaneously honouring their past while expounding their present in torridly authentic fashion.

Sean laughs saying the album is like a Make Them Suffer “greatest hits”, but with “all new songs”.

“But in all seriousness, there’s a lot of eyes and ears on this record. We definitely had something to prove with this album, and I think we’ve achieved that.”

Tracing its origins back to 2022, this new Make Them Suffer era was first set in motion by the
announcement of a “fifth member” Alex Reade, taking up the role of backing vocalist and keyboardist.

Reade’s addition was accompanied by a vortex of heaviness in the form of the 2022 single “Doomswitch”, ushering in a dynamic return to heavier terrain.

Engineered, mixed and mastered by Jeff Dunne (Disturbed, Ice Nine Kills, Fit For A King), the group recorded the album in Portland, during a two-week window between tours.

Encompassing a variety of hard-hitting lyrical content, including post-doomsday rumination, abandonment, resentment, mental health, and anger, it’s all woven together with unbridled authenticity, reflecting the band’s shared professional and personal experiences.

“The end product of this album is the amalgamation of all of our years of hard work, experimentation, and experience.

“It represents a new chapter, but it’s also one that we’ve been building and working towards for our entire careers.”

“This ultimately feels like the gateway album into Make Them Suffer.”
