What is Goolwal Goolwal? First Nations represent at Brisbane’s BIGSOUND

August 14, 20255 min read

It’s the biggest music event of its kind in the southern hemisphere, and BIGSOUND is set to take over Brisbane for its 24th year – from September 2-5 – with Goolwal Goolwal kicking things off.

What is Goolwal Goolwal?

Goolwal Goolwal is the First Nations representation of the monolithic music event, which brings an industry melting pot of speakers, representatives, and big-name acts to Fortitude Valley next month.

Translated from the traditional Yuggera language, “Goolwal Goolwal” means “Big Sound”. And it is now a profound (and deadly) part of the BIGSOUND programming.

The Goolwal Goolwal program is curated and led by a team of First Nations industry professionals and artists. It puts the spotlight on the wealth of talent which thrives within their communities nationwide.

Nestled in the busy CBD of Magandjin (Brisbane), the Goolwal Garden is the official First Nations space at BIGSOUND. And it is located at the Valley’s live music venue Sound Garden.

Goolwal Goolwal attendees can immerse themselves in a dynamic series of panels, performances, and workshops. Best still, all the events in this program are free.

Tickets to Goolwal Goolwal @ BIGSOUND are here: https://www.bigsound.org.au/tickets.

BARKAA tops BIGSOUND 2025’s Goolwal Goolwal program

Goolwal Goolwal @ BIGSOUND this year brings a dynamic program from First Nations artists, creatives, and leaders, such as Australian rapper and musician BARKAA (main picture).

Tuesday, September 2

Kicking off BIGSOUND 2025 is the Opening Ceremony, led by renowned community and industry leader, Sandra King (O.A.M). A traditional Smoking Ceremony will also take place. This is an ancient custom that not only cleanses, but wards off bad spirits and welcomes people in positive energy.

This year, trailblazing artist BARKAA brings a wealth of knowledge and experience, appearing on two special panel discussions in collaboration with Support Act on September 2-3.

Having navigated a prolific rise herself in recent years, the Malyangapa, Barkindji superstar will share her observations and tips for the Yarning Strong panel, “Pass The Mic, Not The Trauma: Navigating Parenthood in the Industry” on Tuesday, from 3:30-4:30pm. This session is dedicated to exploring how to balance social and mental wellbeing with the artistic craft.

Wednesday, September 3

BARKAA will appear again on the panel “Leave Britney Alone: Navigating Notoriety” on Wednesday, from 2:15pm-3pm. This session was created to provide insights on the pressures artists face to speak out on pressing issues, and the impact on vocalising opinions in the public realm.

Awesome Black will play host to a diverse and electric roster on Wednesday, showcasing the dynamism and defining sounds of contemporary Blak music, at the Brunswick Street Mall stage.

Another highlight includes the celebration of 10 years of Bad Apples Music: Now And Forever: BIGSOUND Edition. Bad Apples has changed the landscape for First Nations artists to be recognised and succeed in Australia.

The music celebrations continue with YANGADA and the Bush Day Out. YANGADA (Mutti Mutti: to speak), represents the sharing of knowledge and memory through songs and stories – think, Kutcha’s Koorioke and a campfire yarn! Presented by the Bush Music Fund, the Bush Day Out will feature a stellar lineup of talent.

Thursday, September 4

The Brunswick Street Mall Stage plays host to The BLOCK PARTY CONNECT: FROM BOORLOO TO MEANJIN , presented by FNFOCUS & FLEWNT. Featuring a staunch line up of West Coast talent including FLEWNTINKABEEDownsyde, Taija, JJ Vacant and TEHIIRI + special guests, this block party brings an unforgettable series of hip hop performances as part of Goolwal Goolwal 2025.
