Sippy Downs: It didn’t take the University of the Sunshine Coast (UniSC) long to move from a ‘dry’ campus to a ‘sticky’ one, with a Variety Festival set for Wednesday, September 13.
Rumours that alcohol might soon become a permanent menu item at the uni had been circulating the student and staff population for months, Yelo reported last week.
And it seems UniSC has come to the party, announcing the festivities (yes, alcoholic beverages included) will feature favourite local bands Ella Joy, Nuraini and Ampersand.
Ella Joy (pictured) is just 19-years-old and is a passionate, dedicated performer and songwriter, with more than six years of industry experience.
Equipped to perform in folk, Americana and popular repertoires, in both originals and covers, Ella has just released her debut single, Never Fascinated, on Spotify and other streaming platforms.
“I have loved music since I can remember,” Ella said.
“Songwriting is my passion and I love sharing my music with other people – it’s incredible when someone resonates with your own song.”
Nuraini is also an emerging singer/songwriter weaving her earthy tones into song through heartfelt lyrics.
With a bucket-load of busking under her guitar, Nuraini connects with her audience and is an exceptional talent who regularly features at weddings, festivals and corporate events.
Ampersand is sure to entertain with their energetic and ever-evolving funk/fusion, featuring two spectacular lead vocalists, and backed by a tight, innovative trio of keys, bass and drums.
In two years of gigging, Ampersand has become like family to Noosa locals as they both improvise and converse technically, with their engaging and infectious rhythms, which has allowed them to adapt to any stage or venue, and secured them several residencies, festivals and headlined gigs across Queensland.
Ampersand, Ella Joy and Nuraini are sure to inspire music students or any aspiring musicians who have always wanted to take their passion for music to the next level.
All these wonderful young performers have been Unearthed on Triple J and are a testament to the professionalism and excellence of our Sunshine Coast live music.
In partnership with Amped, and the UniSC Student Guild and Creative Industries, this music and student drinking-debut kicks off from 5pm-8pm.
UniSC’s Variety Night is on September 13 at K1 Outdoor Stage. It’s free entry, with tasty food and drinks (craft beer anyone?) available to purchase.
