FLOOD: The New Wave of Australia’s Local Music Discovery

January 11, 20263 min read

Recent research shows Australians actively seek out new and independent music, with over 80% saying they enjoy discovering local artists on streaming platforms.” – Spotify

If Australia’s music scenes had their own sounds, what would they be? YELO Magazine’s new project FLOOD answers that question – one city at a time.

FLOOD is a series of hyper-local Spotify playlists, each one featuring only musicians from a single region. Think of them as curated indie radio stations built for the places we love: Sunshine Coast, Gold Coast, Brisbane, Byron, Melbourne, Perth and beyond.

But FLOOD isn’t just another playlist drop – it’s a cultural project designed to spotlight emerging Australian artists.

Listen to the Sunshine Coast Local Music Playlist

This is the first official FLOOD playlist, showcasing the sounds of the Sunshine Coast:

A Sound Identity for Every City

Australia’s music culture is rich, diverse, and exploding with talent – yet so much of it goes unheard.

Each FLOOD playlist is built around a simple idea: every region has its own underground music scene. The artists, the venues, the late-night gigs, the beach towns, the suburbs, the hidden bars – together they create a sound that belongs to that place alone.

FLOOD captures that identity.

Each playlist creates a unified national series, but the music inside each one is uniquely shaped by the local scene, culture, and creative energy of the region. It’s a way for locals to hear themselves—and for everyone else to discover how each Australian city sounds.

We kick things off with the sounds of the Sunshine Coast, the Gold Coast and Brisbane, with more cities to come as FLOOD grows across the country.

Tap your city to flood your feed with local music:

Launching With the Sunshine Coast

The first playlist, FLOOD: Sunshine Coast, is officially live – featuring around 30 genuine Coast artists across indie, folk, surf-pop, alt-rock, electronic, and more.

It’s a sound map of the region, shaped entirely by the people who live and create there.

As FLOOD expands into new cities, the mission stays simple: “Flood each city with its own local music.”

A wave of Australian culture is coming – one region at a time.
