Caloundra’s creative hub vision moves closer

Early works are underway on a future Sunshine Coast Community and Creative Hub.

Council has appointed Hutchinson Builders to begin preparing the Bulcock Street site at Caloundra for a new town square. The appointment marks the next step in plans to reshape the suburb’s CBD around a more connected civic and cultural precinct.

The broader project is designed to link key public and cultural spaces across the town centre. These include The Events Centre, Library+, Caloundra Regional Gallery, Bulcock Street and the beachfront.

The Events Centre already anchors much of Caloundra’s live music and events activity, with regular performances, touring shows and community events drawing crowds into the town centre.

Creative precinct vision starts with town square works

Sunshine Coast Mayor Rosanna Natoli said removing the former building would help open up the area and create a more people-focused space.

“This project will unlock a central site to create a more open and leafy people-focused city centre,” Mayor Natoli said.

She said the future precinct would create stronger links between cultural spaces and public areas, helping shape a more welcoming civic heart for Caloundra.

Member for Caloundra Kendall Hatcher said the contractor appointment marked an important milestone for the project.

“This project is about opening up the heart of Caloundra, creating a greener, more welcoming town square that brings people together and strengthens connections between the city, the beach and local businesses,” Mrs Hatcher said.

The project is jointly funded by Council and the Queensland Government. Works at the Bulcock Street site are expected to take about four months, depending on weather and site conditions.

The early stage will begin with the removal of internal fixtures and fittings, followed by demolition of the existing building. Once demolition is complete, the site will be secured and prepared for the next phase of the town square upgrade.

Access to Felicity Park, Omrah Avenue, Library+ and The Events Centre will remain open during the works. There will be temporary changes to the Otranto Avenue car park until demolition is complete.
