Bruce Reynolds exhibition opens at Caloundra Regional Gallery

The Bruce Reynolds exhibition How Soon is Now? has opened at Caloundra Regional Gallery.

The major touring exhibition invites Sunshine Coast visitors to slow down and look closer.

How Soon is Now? runs from May 22 to June 28, bringing together cast relief sculptures and collaged linoleum works by Brisbane artist Bruce Reynolds.

Reynolds’ practice sits somewhere between painting, sculpture, drawing and architecture.

The exhibition is touring nationally with Museums & Galleries Queensland and arrives on the Sunshine Coast with a focus on handmade, physical art in a world increasingly shaped by screens.

Art that asks people to look closer

Reynolds’ work explores memory, migration, time and the way people shape — and are shaped by — their environments.

The exhibition includes textured relief forms and layered works that draw on history, architecture and the human habit of carrying the past into the present.

Reynolds said the works were less about easy answers and more about asking questions.

“Since how we see the past reflects how we see ourselves, the works are intended to question the tableau of history with consideration of the recent and ancient together,” Reynolds said.

His career has developed over decades, with time spent working in Rome influencing his use of relief forms — artworks that stand out from the wall while remaining closely connected to the surface.

Free exhibition in Caloundra

Caloundra Regional Gallery is at 22 Omrah Avenue, within walking distance of Caloundra Library+, Bulcock Street and Kings Beach.

Entry is free. The gallery is open Tuesday to Friday from 10am to 4pm and weekends from 10am to 2pm.

Visitors can also take part in self-guided art activities, making the exhibition an easy option for families, art lovers and first-time gallery visitors looking for something thoughtful to do in Caloundra.

Sunshine Coast Council Strong Community Portfolio Councillor David Law said the exhibition was the kind of cultural experience the region was proud to support.

“Bruce Reynolds’ work encourages people to slow down, think deeply and connect with art, with history and with each other,” Cr Law said.

How Soon is Now? is a Museums & Galleries Queensland touring exhibition presented in partnership with Bruce Reynolds.

The project has been assisted by the Australian Government’s Visions of Australia program and is supported by the Queensland Government through Arts Queensland.
