Sunshine Coast drummer @baileydrummer chatted with Yelo about his popular podcast, connecting with enthusiastic musicians and having an outlet outside of hitting the tubs.
Nambour drummer and podcaster Bailey Walker is quickly becoming the online sensation with his podcast, “Ask a Muso“, charging through its fourth season.
The series of interviews, where Bailey puts the spotlight on the life of local musicians, is racking up views and listens across social media, with Bailey saying the best is yet to come.
The idea behind Ask a Muso…
Bailey started the popular podcast in 2020 as an outlet to connect with other musicians during their forced time away from their respective musical projects.
As a way to combat the isolation and mounting pressures, the young drummer – who plays in several Sunshine Coast bands – created something that would give him a sense of community again.
He also wanted to cheer those up who had lost their jobs.
“I made it for those who I knew would be at a loose end and would probably be pretty despondent,” he says.
“I thought it would be a good chance to ignore the world events and just focus on sharing their art in a new way.
“Each guest has their own charm and every episode has helped me learn something either about myself or them.
“I love chatting with those who have lots of industry experience, as well as those who just make me laugh to the point we forget the mics and cameras are even there.”
Some featured Ask a Muso guests…
Check out this episode with Chris Ah Gee and JaZZella; two Sunshine Coast musical icons who have nailed the art of diversifying their work:
Bailey mostly records the podcast in his studio, but also on-location around the Coast and remotely.
“I love recording them in my home, but I also love going to other people’s creative spaces and chatting with them on their own home turf,” he says.
His favourite mid-episode moment so far?
“Hmm probably the smoke alarm going off during my ep with Harlum and El Mack. Worth watching if you haven’t already! Can’t skip past the talented Leon Kechayas having us both in hysterical laughter over some poorly timed comments also!”
Outside of the Coast, Bailey has enjoyed connecting with bigger industry figures such as Bliss n Eso’s own man behind the kit, Dan Kerby. Check it out below.
You can stream Ask a Muso on all major streaming platforms or watch each episode in full on YouTube. The podcast will take a short hiatus in September and return in 2025.
