Best music merch on the Sunshine Coast

November 26, 202310 min read

It’s AusMusic T-Shirt Day on November 30 and to kick it off YELO music editor Penny Brand has hand-picked some merch from her favourite Sunny Coast artists.

I’m a self-confessed merch freak. And this AusMusic T-Shirt Day I’ll be sporting my YELO trucker hat and Peace Run Records tee.

I love what Peace Run Records stands for; and Fiji/Australian crooner Andrea Kirwin kinda rocks. But on a completely aesthetic level, this T-shirt is just gorgeous in every which way. It’s feminine, bougie, and a bit islander rock.

I think it emanates peace, freedom, love and happiness: everything we strive for in the music industry, including a fair go. AusMusic T-Shirt Day forms part of AusMusic Month, and celebrates Australian music while raising money for Support Act, which helps musicians, managers, crew, and music workers in crisis.

Check out some of the merch for AusMusic T-shirt day or visit ausmusictshirtday.org.au.

Buderim high school teacher Drew Wilson (main picture) has fans in his hundreds of students, but his new song, “Holding onto You”, is popular in its own right and enjoying rotation on 92.7 Mix FM. The soul-soothing acoustic soloist supported Carl Wockner at Solbar in September. Check out his new song on Spotify.

If you haven’t heard the twangy, blue-grass sounds of country/alt-blues folkster Jack Raymond get him into your ears, stat. With 11,000 monthly Spotify listeners, Raymond is taking the Sunshine Coast by storm, with gorgeous new song “Harriet” becoming a fan fave.

He’s currently back in the recording studios at Yama Nui laying down some new tracks, and only recently returned from a tour of his home state of Victoria. Catch Raymond at the Agnes Blues and Roots Festival in February, with local music side-kick Jay Bishoff. His tee, “The Nicotine Blues”, comes in stone. Grab one here.

Andrea Kirwin is an incredible singer/songwriter in her own right, but has slowly become the bridge between Sunshine Coast Council and community, and is doing a stellar job of balancing the complexities of the Coast’s political and musical landscape. Founder of Peace Run Records, Kirwin is part of a major push to make Nambour great again, and Council even employed her to curate the popular Nambour Forecourt Live! monthly events.

Kirwin’s “Nashville, New Orleans, Nambour, New York” tees are popular among Nambour residents, including Councillor David Law and I Am Nambour Ambassador Rhonda Billett.

Her Peace Run Records range has been popular, and Kirwin even teamed up with a local brewery to create Peace Run beer, where 100 per cent of profit made goes directly to her crew. Rumour has it she has another Nambour-insipred tee on its way! Think: global.

Chamber Lane recently played an incredible headline show at The Presynct, proving these guys are a serious bunch of infectious indie rockers. The loveable punk larrikins, with Connor Hanson at the helm, sing all about mental health matters, including Hanson’s self-confessed dealings with OCD, burnout and isolation. These guys are seriously on the up! Watch this space.

Gudgeon’s fish portrait tee, from the funk-metal band’s “Full Proper Arthouse Shit” range, was painted by the drummer’s partner, Kiarna Anne Grace. The band recently played killer sets at The Presynct, Tribe Clubhouse, Commercial Hotel, and King Lear’s Throne, and they even have a new album! The eye-grabbing fish portrait also features on the band’s album cover, which you can snag at Bad Habit Records in downtown Nambour.

Another band which hails from the great music capital of Nambour, is Sailing in Space. This band is just fun all round, and will have everyone on their feet. The high-energy, hip-hop trio, who like to jump around in spacesuits on stage, recently supported Chamber Lane at The Presynct, and their new song, “Cheap Suits”, is out now. They also have a bunch of super bright tees, including this neon green, universe-hopping martian (right).

Reggae/roots beats dropper Hayden Hack has dropped a cute range of tees, including this little giraffe number. The South African songwriter and musician is a trailblazing maestro, who crafts sonic wonders with his unique guitar and vocal landscape. In his funky, afro-inspired, journeyman music, he recounts stories from his travels, offering a different perspective on the world. Hack has graced the stages of festivals and venues across Europe, Australia, South Africa, and Japan, leaving a lasting impression on listeners. Support him here: https://haydenhack.com.

The “Sunrise Slide” T-shirt, is by lap slide guitarist and roots troubadour Pat Tierney, who brings an eclectic and captivating musical experience to everything he touches, even his merch. Taking influence from the likes of Bob Dylan, Ben Harper and JJ Cale, Tierney’s music drifts effortlessly between folk, blues, roots, and soul. And his tee is as simple and sweet as his lyrics. A true songwriter and poet, he brings an old-school approach with modern tales of love, loss, hope, and social justice. Support his craft by wearing one of his tees this AusMusic T-Shirt Day.

Trillions is a three-piece punk band, which hit the ground running this year quickly making a name for themselves with their loud and energetic performances. James (guitar/vocals), Lewis (bass) and Jett (drums) bring an alt-rock sound to the stage, and if you love Muse, Nirvana, Foo Fighters, Silverchair, Violent Soho and Something For Kate, you’ll probably love them!

New single called, “Sick”, recently clocked more than seven thousands streams, and the boys finished up their year of music on a high at Nambour’s newest live music venue, The Presynct, where they performed with Hazy Tides and Odesa, while earlier this month they played alongside Butterfingers, 28 Days and Cog at the Gold Coast’s Wallapalooza. Wowsers!

Indie-folk duo JC & The Tree always touch the hearts of their audiences. Morphing the excellent songwriting skills and luscious voice of Mr Tree with the experience of JC on the violin and keys, this musical partnership in heaven has a wide range of original repertoire, combining vocal harmonies to create a unique sound journey.

You’d be forgiven if you had to look twice at Dellacoma lead frontman, Dellacoma Rio. The musician, performer, and actor plays enigmatic playboy Michael Hutchence in the The Australian INXS Show. After living and playing in the US, Del and his band recently returned home, playing kick-ass home-coming shows at Norton Music Factory and The Presynct.

Of course The Chats have some epic merch, now that they’re one of the most important rock bands in Australia.

The Buttheads T-shirt is a perfect match for the man with the ginger-mullet, bassist and vocalist himself, Eamon Sandwith. The cheeky-spirited, punk-rock band, formed on the Coast in 2016, and are self-described “shed rockers”. Guitarist Josh Hardy and drummer Matt Boggis agree this hipster cord hat will help you slip, slop, slap the summer.

The Chats play Sol Bar on February 9 and it’s gonna be epic.

This super cool, black draw-string hoodie, with pouch pocket, honours local legendary band, The Dreggs. The Dreggs are a smashing folk-pop duo, formed in 2017, who are soaring to new heights. Consisting of Paddy Macrae and Zane Harris, the lads hail from Bribie Island.

This jumper sure looks like it will keep you warm during post-surf cuddles with your ocean-loving pooch.

And while we’re at it, we can’t forget local surf-rock crooner Ziggy Alberts, who has a rivalling black jumper, because we all still need to look cool when we take surf trips to those chilly southern waters. Alberts recently spoke out about his sobriety on national-award winning Mudjimba podcast, Sober Awkard.

Get your merch now for AusMusic T-Shirt Day and support all the wonderful Sunshine Coast artists.
