Chamber Lane singer opens up about mental health journey

November 9, 20233 min read

Mountain Creek: Burnout, isolation and mental health are just a few of the things Connor Hanson discusses openly in his music.

The instrumental music teacher from St Joseph’s Primary in Nambour spoke to YELO about his obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) diagnosis, ahead of his band Chamber Lane’s debut at Nambour’s hottest new live music venue, The Presynct, on November 17.

“I have what the doctors described to me as ‘quite an extreme case of OCD’, which mental health-wise has always effected me negatively my whole life,” the 20-year-old said.

Hanson went into a “bit of a spiral” becoming “super depressed” as a result of the OCD, which only made the condition worse.

“It lead to some very severe health anxiety where I started to think every bump, scratch and cut on me was something unbelievably serious,” he said.

“It was absolutely paralysing and stopped me from leaving the house many times.”

Hanson was able to accept the disorder with time, and wants to help others do the same.

“I think songwriting in particular has such a special place to me in my heart. I just absolutely love creating.”

Hailing from Mountain Creek, Hanson is the band’s frontman and rhythm guitarist (pictured left).

He has wanted to be a musician for as long as he can remember, growing up on a staple diet of bands such as Oasis and The Beatles.

“I’d had a lot of hobbies growing up but nothing compared to the feeling I got when I was writing or listening to music.”

Chamber Lane’s indi-punk genre was “basically made up” by the band, and features hard-hitting punk riffs, catchy pop-punk melodies and deep storytelling.

They have played sold-out gigs at The Triffid and Solbar, with the band’s biggest show at Caloundra’s Norton Music Factory.

However, their biggest accomplishment has been the gratitude from their audience.

“We’ve done nothing but grind in this band,” he said.

“Seeing the progression of the music and having people notice and feel that, and come to the shows and tell us that, would without a shadow of a doubt be one of the biggest accomplishments we’ve felt together as a band.”

What do you love about the Coast?

“The culture is awesome, everyone’s quite friendly, the weather is really nice, and it’s the place I feel the most at home.”

What do you hope for the future of music here?

“I just hope everyone starts seeing the endless amount of unbelievable talent that we have here.

“I know for a fact we are a hotspot for the best bands in the country right now.”

Watch this space, because this band hopes they will one day headline the UK’s famous Glastonbury Festival!

Local bands Sailing in Space and Ball Point will also play with Chamber Lane on November 17 at The Presynct in Nambour.
