Genre-fluid electro-acoustic artist Mia Petra, from Newcastle, will bring a visually immersive show to The Presynct, Nambour, on November 30.

The Newcastle native is touring the east-coast to celebrate her latest single “Big/Heavy/Big” (out November 20) and will include Brisbane’s It’s Still A Secret on December 1.

Written during a period of solo travel, “Big/Heavy/Big” – which forms part of Mia’s debut album, “SKIING THE GUT” – encapsulates the tension and dissonance of navigating change in an environment that never stops moving.

Capturing the dissonance of a changing environment

“I’m deeply sensitive to the world around me, and that comes through in my music,” Mia says.

“This new work reflects my personal travels, the experience of returning home after a year in Aotearoa (New Zealand), and the queer experience.”

Listen to Mia Petra’s song “Crocodile” released last year.

Mia’s expressive and boundary-defying music, blends the lines between contemporary-folk, electro-ambient, jazz and soul.

It’s lush and experimental, drawing inspiration from artists such as Esperanza Spalding and FKA Twigs.

Performing with a five-piece ensemble of folk musicians, her shows are refreshingly unpredictable and playfully atmospheric.

Enriched by interludes, visual projections, and samples from Mia’s travels, it’s all woven into the performance as sonic memories.

Experimental sounds, rich vocals and visual projections

Audiences can expect harmonically rich vocal arrangements, intricate double bass and percussion grooves in unexpected time signatures, and lively fiddle melodic lines.

It’s all seamlessly fused with a blend of acoustic and electronic elements, enhanced by hand-crafted samples and effects.

“My ultimate goal is to strike that yummy balance between acoustic and electronic,” Mia says.

“I grew up around my mother’s singing groups and cabaret projects.

“That environment was particularly theatrical and influenced my love for stagecraft and giving the audience an all-encompassing experience.”

Mia will be joined by an outstanding lineup of experimental musicians: Timothy Merriken on double bass, Naomi Jones on fiddle/vocals, Rose Callaghan on drums/vocals, and Darcy Archer on percussion synth/vocals.

Mia Petra and her band will be supported by Angela Newcomb and Angharad Drake.
