Ryan Barwick from indi outfit Loose Goose gives his wrap up of the Gold Coast’s live music scene every month. This is Golden Gigs with Ryan.
I feel like I haven’t even finished processing 2023 and we’re already a quarter of the way through the year. I’ve even mentioned Easter in this month’s guide. What!? Anyway, we’ve got a very big month ahead, so lock in, switch on. Let’s get down to business.
Favourite sons
To kick off the month, we’ve got Northern Rivers five-piece ensemble Ferny Fairway (main picture) first headline show for the year at Mo’s Desert Clubhouse tonight, March 1. The boys are celebrating the release of their banging new single, “Stay Around”. They have been hitting straight sixes in the past year, and they promise a massive night. I wouldn’t be surprised if this one goes off and we see another packed out Mo’s. To top it off, they’re playing with a star-studded line-up: Tube Screamers, Thrist Trap and (of course) Loose Goose. What more could you ask for on a Friday?
Murdering the dancefloor
If you haven’t been living under a rock, you’ll know the name Royel Otis. Their new album, electric stage presence and really good taste in covers (master stroke on Triple J’s Like A Version) has them soaring through the Australian music scene. Their show at Miami Marketta on March 9 has already sold out, so count yourself lucky if you managed tickets. They are genuinely one of the most amazing bands I’ve seen live.
Huge times at Mo’s
Aussie singer/songwriter Conrad Sewell (pictured) who everyone knows the minute they hear, “Firestone”, will be at Mo’s Desert Clubhouse on March 7. Huge huge act, well done to Mo’s for wrangling it. I wouldn’t be surprised to see it sellout. Definitely wouldn’t have to be a massive fan to really enjoy this one.
The Velvet Club is also coming to Mo’s on March 10, and what a show we’re predicting it to be. I wouldn’t be surprised to see this one sell out, they haven’t released the local acts as of yet, but we know it’ll be a fair few cracking bands.
While you wait for them to hit the stage, enjoy a few bevies at home with your mates and watch US psychedelic proto-rock band Frankie and the Witch Fingers free on Mo’s home-streaming platform, DesertTV at 2pm.
To cap off a huge month at Mo’s is Concrete Gold, who are holding a big old party on March 16 to celebrate the release of their album, “Burning Out”. For anyone into that 90’s rock sound, I couldn’t think of a better suggestion, these guys are unbelievable. Some of the most talented musicians I’ve ever seen, every show is wild and different, so definitely look forward to this one.Â
Bowls Club surprise
Loose Goose celebrates the release of their brand new single, “Cav Ave Kebab”, on March 8. Butttttt, unlike the normal venues, they’ve decided to go off the beaten track and play at Musgrave Bowls Club, with Brisbane legends Later Daze. A bit of a bizarre venue choice, we know, but it offers a different draw card to most normal gigs, there’s a free shuttle bus to the clubs with free entry upon arrival included, and awesome pub grub and plenty of frothy ones. This should be a more informal show, so we look forward to seeing how this one goes.Â
80s old-skewl
I’m not the usual generation to be a huge fan of 1927 (pictured). But somehow I managed an early obsession with them when I was 14, so damn straight imma ready to scream my lungs out when I see them. They play at Miami Marketta on March 17. I’ve loving these good ol’ feel-goods coming through!
Open mic
For all our aspiring musicians, Miami Marketta is putting on an open mic night on March 20. Great place to start out performing in front of a smaller crowd, and prizes for the winners, so definitely worth a look.
Pick of the month: Hops ‘n’ Bops
We’ve been looking forward to this one for a while now! This one is going to be a cracker. Local booking agent It Goes Like This is backing up their unreal festival, Dream Sound, with an Easter bash, Hops ‘N’ Bops, at Miami Marketta, on March 31.
Once again, they’ve managed to wrangle an absolutely killer line-up, consisting of Chutney, Gully Days, Local Safari, Daysick and Levi Maxwell. They’ve got so much going on from specialised cocktails to easter egg hunts, it’s hard to think there’s anything you’d rather do on your Easter Sunday. Tickets here.
What do you think?
