Sunshine Coast hinterland projects get $14m

June 24, 20244 min read

Sunshine Coast hinterland projects are set to benefit from $14 million in funding for a mix of diverse projects.

It’s all thanks to Council’s 2024-25 Budget, which also sees the Nambour Administration Precinct receive $1.8 million.

That money will be put towards transforming Council’s former administration building into a community-focused building.

Changes to the Eddie De Vere building include an integrated library, workspaces, accessible meeting and activity spaces, and high-tech equipment.

The Nambour Place Plan will push ahead with $700,000 put towards improving the town centre’s streetscapes. And also in facilitating a diverse range of events and cultural connections.

Council is investing $1.4 million in the Nambour Place Plan over two years. This blueprint will help guide the future of Nambour as a creative and cultural hub. It includes streetscape improvements to Currie, Howard and Mill streets.

Community library is major part of Sunshine Coast hinterland plan

Planning and design work will commence on the ground floor of the Eddie De Vere building next month.

Key changes to kick off the Nambour Place Plan:

  • A dedicated area within the foyer designed to foster a welcoming and inviting environment for the community.
  • Bookable activity space to serve as a multi-purpose area for community activities.

A Council spokesperson says the multi-purpose space is capable of hosting a variety of activities. Equipped with modern audio-visual capabilities, the space aims to support community meetings and other offerings.

Pricing to hire the meeting and activity spaces are yet to be determined.

Interim changes to the Eddie De Vere building have signalled the start of a comprehensive redevelopment for the suburb of Nambour.

Council continues to foster the local cultural scene through initiatives such as Forecourt Live!. As well as ongoing support for events like the Namba Street Fair, Tramfest, and the Nambour Twilight Markets.

The Special Entertainment Precinct (SEP) has allowed private venues such as The Presynct and The Vogue to host live music.

“This represents our commitment to creating a more community-focused space within the Nambour administration building precinct,” Division 10 Councillor David Law says.

“We’re excited to make these changes contributing to a vibrant and welcoming hub for our community.”

Eddie De Vere is a prominent Sunshine Coast hinterland building

The Eddie De Vere is a prominent building in the Sunshine Coast hinterland suburb of Nambour.

Nambour is a creative and culturally active town known as the “heart of the hinterland”.

Built in 1977, the Currie Street commercial property was commissioned by Shire Chairman of the Maroochy Shire, Councillor Eddie De Vere.

He ordered the construction of a new local government precinct to include local government shire chambers, an office building, library, and town square.

The building was designed by a well-known architect and town planner, James Birrell, who specialised in public architecture.

His body of work includes projects for the Brisbane City Council, such as the Toowong Library, Centenary Pool Centre and Wickham Terrace Car Park.

The design of the Council chambers’ facade utilised a form and layout derived from the “Golden Mean”, an ancient Greek architecture ratio that references natural order.
