Legendary music marvel Sarah Howells, of Triple J and Double J fame, ventures off the Sunny Coast’s beaten beach tracks to unearth the hidden live music gems in our diverse communities. Here are her finds for March.
Buttermello
Some fresh new music from local indie-rock sweethearts Buttermello has just dropped. The latest is called ‘Dreaming Still’ and if this is a taste of the upcoming EP I am ready to devour it. It was just last year that they released their breakout single ‘Little Bit of Love’ and have been going from strength to strength. Brandon says this song is about growing up (but not really wanting to grow up) and of not being as accomplished as you want to be. It’s definitely worth a listen.
Betty Taylor
These ladies can do no wrong in my book, and a packed show for the opening night at new venue The Station certainly backs that up. Betty Taylor’s new song, “Can’t Get Enough” is slower paced than what we’ve heard from them before, and that’s perfect for this love song that Sophie Patrick says came about unexpectedly. She told me she wasn’t planning to write a little slow track with producer Aiden but “kind of ran out of ideas and just had a burrito and thought we’ll start something fresh”. While Sophie says she usually goes down a “negative relationship path” with her lyrics she went down a “make believe path with this one. And it’s beautiful.

The Phosphenes
If you like your music with a decent dose of alt-rock check out The Phosphenes. This Caboolture-based three-piece have just released their latest single, “No More”, which will be on their upcoming EP due later in the year. It’s loud, it’s grungy, and it’s catchy as all get out. Better yet, they play at The Presynct on Saturday!
Brook St
So much news in the Brook St camp! This duo in life and love are touring with some beautiful intimate house concerts through March and April – you can catch their local show on March 17. They will also be at Lake Gkula camping at Woodfordia over the school holidays, performing on April 10. And get ready for the duo to turn into a trio come July, with Junior Brook St currently cooking! Congratulations Hannah and Jason – I can’t wait to meet your little one!
CaelWhip
Love your hip hop? Check out CaelWhip (main picture with Nix). His new song, “8am”, is tight and bright and worth your time! It officially drops on March 8 at 8am.
