Citizen Rat takes aim at burnout and the social media grind in new song

April 22, 20261 min read

Brisbane/Sunshine Coast punk and metal outfit Citizen Rat have released a new single, “Happy?”, a hard-edged track built around burnout and the pressure of constant online output.

The band says the single marks the end of the current version of Citizen Rat, describing it as a final statement before moving into a new era in 2026.

Written by frontman and guitarist Dartanyon Hutchison and guitarist Brendan Statham “Happy?” centres on creative burnout, obsessive dedication and the pressure musicians face trying to keep up with the constant demands of online promotion while still fighting to be heard.

Despite its title, “Happy?” is not pitched as a feel-good track. Citizen Rat describe it as a heavier song built around frustration, exhaustion and the sense of working relentlessly towards something that can still feel out of reach. The release closes on the line, “I’m Happy, at least that’s how I seem.”

Musically, the band describe the track as driven by heavy riffs, propulsive drums, explosive vocals, a wilder guitar solo and a sing-along hook.

“Happy?” was produced by longtime collaborator Jordan Bain and mastered by King Willy.

Catch Citizen Rat on ABC Sunshine Coast with YELO music editor Penny Brand next Tuesday (April 28).
