Love a big-name artist? Find a Queensland act you can actually go and see. Start with a familiar sound, then follow it somewhere local.
These are listening tips, not soundalike claims or endorsements from the bigger artists. Put the first track on and decide for yourself.

See Nirvana at Nirvana prices.
Not literally. But In a 1993 interview, Nirvana learned their tickets were around US$17–18. Plenty of Queensland bands are still playing local rooms for around the price of a couple of drinks. The point of this page is to help you find the band you love before the ticket costs arena money.
Start with an artist you already know, then try a Queensland act sitting somewhere in the same orbit. YELO is prioritising active artists you can still catch in pubs, breweries, small rooms and local festivals without turning the night into a major-ticket spend. We build the matches from artists we have played, covered, added to our playlists and followed closely, using artist-stated influences wherever we can verify them.

Big names first. Brisbane artists next.

If you love
The Ramones
Try Radium Dolls. Their own Unearthed profile puts The Ramones alongside Peep Tempel, Gang of Four and The Fall as reference points. The Brisbane band bring punk bite, big feelings and a loose pub-rock swagger of their own.
Try Jem Cassar-Daley. Jem has spoken about loving the clear, descriptive storytelling of both artists, alongside pop influences including Gwen Stefani and Beyoncé.
Try Whose Party. The Brisbane band list both among their touchstones, mixing grungy guitar textures with pop hooks and delicate vocals. Start with their 2026 releases on Unearthed.
Try Selve. The Gold Coast six-piece have named Fontaines D.C., Foals and Pink Floyd among their contemporary rock reference points. Expect restless guitars, scale and a strong identity of their own.
Try Hollow Coves. The duo have directly cited Angus & Julia Stone, Ben Howard and The Paper Kites as influences on their earthy harmonies and acoustic indie-folk.
Try Seajem Sounds. The Gold Coast band cite both as touchstones for their own harmony-led indie-country and roots music. They are still playing local stages, from busking spots to rooms like Mo’s Desert Clubhouse.
Try The Dreggs. Their Unearthed profile lists The Lumineers, Mumford & Sons, Sam Fender, Noah Kahan and Gang of Youths among the closest reference points.
Try Lilli Fairfax. Lilli directly names Kasey Chambers alongside Alanis Morissette and Stevie Nicks as influences on her country storytelling, pop melody and rock grit.
Try Beaudi Dwan + Drew Wilson. Beaudi takes the singer-songwriter road further into Americana and grit, while Drew sits closer to warm acoustic pop and reflective storytelling.
Try Calan Mai. YELO has long put Calan in the smart, melodic Australian indie-songwriter lane; his Unearthed profile also points to Ball Park Music, Bright Eyes and Blink-182.
Try Sagnar. The Hervey Bay high-school trio directly cite NOFX, Pennywise, Frenzal Rhomb and Lagwagon, with fast riffs, loud drums and classic 90s skate-punk energy.
Try DMC Boys with MUFASSA. Start with their collaboration “Pelican”. DMC Boys bring Gangalidda stories, language and connection to Country through rock and reggae, with MUFASSA adding his Sunshine Coast roots groove. Follow the collaboration back to the DMC Boys’ own music.
Doomadgee / Sunshine Coast · rock / reggae / roots
Try Tullara. This is a roots-guitar and storytelling match, not a claim that the two sound alike. Based in Cairns, Tullara moves between folk, rock and pop with a powerful voice and formidable guitar work. Start with “Never Been Loved By You”.
There are more Queensland bands playing great local rooms than we can fit here. If a familiar artist sends you straight to a local act, tell us who and which track to start with. We’ll keep adding matches as we hear them, with an eye on shows you can catch without an arena-sized ticket.
YELO’s comparisons are editorial listening suggestions. They do not imply collaboration, endorsement or a direct musical lineage. Have a match we should hear? Send us your music.
