UniSC Variety Fest puts spotlight on local talent

April 5, 20242 min read

The Rowe Sisters are taking the Sunshine Coast music scene by storm and will feature at UniSC’s Variety Fest on Wednesday.

Abbey, 17, and Ruby, 14, who bring rich and powerful harmonies to the stage, will join Katie Daniels, Ted Watson and Band, and The Wave Raiders for the semesterly event.

The girls scored the chance to sing at the festival after attending an AMPED live performance workshop at Light Industry Studio, Kunda Park.

But it’s not their first rodeo, with the girls slogging it out at every opportunity from busking slots to local events.

“We have had many great opportunities to progress, from regular busking slots and Circle of Sound open mics, to being booked for Noosa Concours, Coolum Christmas Carols, and New Year’s Day on Noosa Beach.”

They have also played at Gympie Music Muster.

“We’ve always been surrounded by music and incredible musicians through being apart of Hamburger Music Studios (at Doonan) from such a young age, which has inspired us greatly.

“The two of us are very passionate and determined to grow a career in this industry and to keep developing our own individual style by creating some original music in the future.”

The girls sing a mix of soul and upbeat numbers that showcase their signature harmonies and vocal riffs.

Previously a “dry campus”, this event marks one of the first for the uni to offer alcohol, and beer and wine will be available to purchase.

Guzman Y Gomez burritos and bowls will also be available for $10 ($5 for students).

Variety Fest is being put on by UniSC Student Guild and Creative Industries in partnership with AMPED.

All the action kicks off from 5pm at K1 stage, UniSC Sippy Downs campus.
